Week 1 La Porte at Baytown Lee Preview

7pm This Friday at Baytown's Stallworth Stadium will be game 2 of the 2010 campaign as La Porte (1-0) takes on Baytown Lee (0-1). La Porte comes off a 37-7 dismantling of Fort Bend Clements.  Baytown Lee lost in overtime to cross town rival and district 21-5a's Baytown Sterling.  Here is a recap of Lee's loss from the Ganders blog: http://leeganderfootball.blogspot.com/.

La Porte will be trying to get revenge for last years season opening 27-14 loss to the Ganders.  It saw QB Malcolm Ruben and WR Jaevon Richardson torch the Bulldogs young defense for 2 long TD's through the air.  Both are returning this season.

Lee has struggled for a few years and is trying to get their program back on the right track. On offense Lee features a spread passing attack with 4 wide receiver sets.  The Ganders use quick passes to set up their running game and spread the defense to rely on one on one match-ups.  Senior QB Malcolm Ruben leads the offense and has a year of experience under his belt after throwing for 1342 yds and 14 tds.  He will be trying to limit his interceptions after throwing 15 last year and 2 in the opening loss to Sterling.  Junior wide receiver Jaevon Richardson also returns as Lee's leading receiver.  Last year Richardson caught 37 passes for 690 yds averaging almost 19 yards per reception.  He is definitely one to watch on Friday.  The tall and quick La Porte cornerbacks will have quite a job containing him. The Ganders had a couple of injuries to other receivers last week and may have to go further down the depth chart for help.  Lee's second leading rusher from 2009 Keith Johnson returns and had a big week against Sterling rushing for 102 yards on 16 carries.

On defense the Ganders are very young, with 5 sophomores starting in week 0.  They gave up 395 yards to Sterling of which 244 was on the ground and 151 through the air.  Lee is going to have a tough time matching up with La Porte's skilled play-makers.

La Porte's Offensive Keys to the Game:
- Get the offensive line some more playing time to build their confidence
- More of the same from last week: mix up the run and pass

Defensive Keys to the Game:
-Get the pass rush to QB Malcolm Ruben and force him to make quick decisions / mistakes
-Contain WR Jaevon Richardson on the outside
-Stop the Lee running game and force them into a one-dimensional offense

Overall La Porte will be heavy favorites in this game, but cannot take anything for granted this early in the season.

I plan on being at the game and will be live on Twitter again: http://twitter.com/LPBulldogBlog

Come out to Baytown and support the Bulldogs!

Highlight video of La Porte vs Clements

http://www.vimeo.com/14497114 Courtesy of Dr. Mark Redd

WOW! In the replays you can really see how the offensive line was in complete cohesion.  I'm not sure if I've ever seen that many untouched runs through the line...

Chad Sutherland can really pop the ball-carrier in the backfield!

Highlight of the game has to be #5 Nance-Garrett's catch and run over the Clements defender, simply amazing! Too bad he stepped out of bounds.

La Porte vs Clements postgame report

What a great performance by the Bulldogs last night against a pre-season favorite Clements.  One thing I saw at the opening of the game was La Porte looked more fired up than Clements.  La Porte was in line for the National Anthem before Clements even hit the field and looked like they were chomping at the bit to play ball.

On the field the defense came out and set the tone after a QB scramble from Austin Decell gained decent yards for Clements, La Porte intercepted soon after.  The two La Porte over 6' tall corners Jon Wesby (1 INT) and Ben Flores really smothered the Clements receivers all night.  The linebackers Chad Sutherland and Jamarcus Erskin, who also intercepted a pass, were continuously in the backfield disrupting the flow of the Ranger offense.  Clements' star running back Jarrod Johnson, held to 15yds on 11 carries, had no room to run and was hit in the backfield almost every play.  Overall the Bulldog defense is as good as advertised with athletes all over the field.

On offense La Porte immediately opened up huge holes for all area RB Anthony Webb who broke off 60 yards on 3 carries on the first drive.  The "inexperienced" Bulldog offensive line was very impressive.  The drive was capped by QB Jeremy McNeal, on the night of his coming out party, with a 12 yard TD to Karl Terrebone.

More of the same for La Porte on the 2nd drive as Webb ran through the Clements line untouched on multiple occasions and capped it off with a 15yd touchdown.  Webb had 115yds rushing with 3:42 left in the first quarter.

The third drive saw Sophmore RB Keith Whitley spell Webb.  This made no difference as Whitley ran 60 yards on 3 plays and also was untouched through the Clements line.  This drive was finished by a McNeal QB keeper and with 11:10 left in the 2nd quarter it was 21-0 La Porte.

The Bulldogs received another punt and Clements came out and stacked the line of scrimmage to stop the run.  McNeal picked apart the Rangers defense through the air including a 36 yard catch by Junior WR Aaron Nance-Garrett who was wide open along the sideline.  As he turned up field a Clements safety was right on him and Nance-Garrett proceeded to lower his shoulder and knock the defenders helmet off and kept running.  Unfortunately Nance Garrett stepped out of bounds, but wow what a play!  McNeal concluded the drive with a 2 yard pass to Senior H-back Zach Reynolds for a touchdown making it 28-0 Bulldogs.

Clements got on the board just before halftime with a series of screen passes and Jarrod Johnson got their only points of the night with a 5yd TD run.  La Porte 28 Clements 7 at the half.

In the second half it seemed La Porte took their foot off the gas considerably.  The Bulldogs were stopped on their first drive and forced to punt for the first time.  Clements was quickly shut down by the La Porte defense and Clements had a bad snap on the punt that went through the end zone for a safety.

The Bulldogs received the kickoff in good field position and methodically drove down the field and faced 4th and 1 on the Clements 15 yard line.  McNeal used a QB sneak and took it in for the score to cap off the scoring.

The fourth quarter saw lots of backups get in the game to get valuable experience. Freshman RB Hoza Scott had some impressive runs and both teams did little else.   La Porte 37- Clements 7.

The Dogs start the season on a strong note out gaining the Rangers 388-156 in total yards.  Impressive debut for La Porte against a preseason acclaimed team.  Here is the box score from the Houston Chronicle: http://www.chron.com/sports/highschoolsports/results.html?site=default&mkt=&Season=2010&tpl=Boxscore&Sport=1&ID=77587&TeamID=70&SearchType=Teams

My players of the game were QB Jeremy McNeal and the La Porte O-line, who came out and showed they are gaining confidence and primed for a great season.

I will have a preview of La Porte-Baytown Lee matchup this week.  The game will be played in Baytown's Stallworth Stadium 7pm Friday the 3rd of September.

Bulldogs dominate Clements 37-7

Wow, what a performance from the Bulldogs.  Here is a link from the Houston Chronicle story on the game: http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/sports/hso/7175284.html

The picture says it all.

I will provide my post-game analysis tomorrow when I get the full stat sheet.  It looks like the Bulldogs are a force to be reckoned with this season.

Gameday for the Bulldogs!

The beginning of the 2010 season is finally here!  This is one of the most anticipated seasons since Boogie Angagnostou's senior year.  The Houston Chronicle has La Porte-Clements as one of the five games of the week and they also have Anthony Webb featured as a "Player of the week to watch".  Click the link for details: http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/sports/hso/7173590.html.

Should be an exciting season and I hope La Porte comes out to cheer on the dogs tonight!

I will be live tweeting for those that cannot make it to the game and still want to know whats going on.  Follow me on the links on this page or here: http://twitter.com/LPBulldogBlog

Hopefully we can get La Porte on TV this season!

A couple of notes on the Bulldogs:
- Lots of sophmores on this years roster (seems like more than years past)
-Freshman running back Hoza Scott is expected to get some playing time this season and Coach LaReau has dubbed him a "Kendrick look alike".  La Porte really can churn out some running back talent can't they?  Montrelle Lowe, Gainus Scott, Quentin Castille, Kendrick Perkins, Anthony Webb and looks like they have a few more in the pipeline with Scott and sophomore Keith Whitley.

Game-day is tomorrow!!! Lets go Dawgs!

Week 0: La Porte vs. Fort Bend Clements Preview

The first game of the season for the Bulldogs is in La Porte against the Clements Rangers. These are two very similar teams.  Clements is a preseason favorite to challenge Hightower for the district title in 23-5A.  The Rangers feature one of the top returning running backs in the area, Jarrod Johnson.  Last season Johnson was shut down after week 5 due to a broken leg, although he did  rack up 592 yards and 7tds in those first five games.  Clements also returns their starting quarterback Austin Decell who is not a prolific passer, but is efficient and has a year of experience under his belt.

Clements defense features a strong secondary and standout middle linebacker Alec Davison.

La Porte features their own standout running back/middle linebacker combo with University of Houston commitment senior RB Anthony Webb and Junior MLB Chad Sutherland.  Both will anchor strong returning groups on both sides of the ball.

Webb comes off a 2009 season in which he evenly split carries with Kendrick Perkins now of the Boston Red Sox and still blazed his way to 1600 yards and 12tds, he is also a good pass-catching threat out of the backfield. La Porte's new starting QB Jeremy McNeal should be an exciting player to watch with his combination of speed and throwing ability that lead the Bulldog 7 on 7 team to an undefeated record this summer.  Karl Terrebone returns as La Porte's leading receiver.

La Porte also returns a strong secondary even with Jeremy McNeal receiving less reps due to his switch to QB. Senior Ryan Moye should see more action this season at safety and he showed a nose for the ball in 2009 in limited action.  The linebackers are the Bulldog's calling card this season with Sutherland and Senior Jamarcus Erskin.  Sutherland has a knack for shedding blockers and getting into the backfield for big plays.  Erskin is a speedy linebacker who makes plays all over the field.

The key for La Porte's Defense will be putting pressure on the inexperienced offensive line of Clements and slowing down Jarrod Johnson.  The Bulldogs offense must establish the running game early to open up passing lanes later in the game.

Overall this is one of the better Houston area matchups for week 0.  I will be tweeting live at http://twitter.com/LPBulldogBlog.

Thoughts on the 2010 schedule

La Porte's schedule for 2010 is stacked early and late.  The early season strength of schedule should help out later in the year when the district pre-season favorites North Shore and Beaumont Westbrook come to town.  The Bulldogs have done a great job the last 10 years scheduling quality early season opponents. Although they have been starting the seasons slow, La Porte always is a step above by the end of the season.  This is always one of the keys to their long post-season runs. The new 21-5A district should provide more challenges this season.

2010 Schedule

Week 0 - Fort Bend Clements @ La Porte 8/27 @ 7pm
Week 1 - La Porte @ Baytown Lee 9/3 @ 7pm
Week 2 - Klein Forest @ La Porte 9/10 @ 7pm

Week 4 - La Porte @ Deer Park 9/24 @ 7pm
Week 5 - Bye Week
Week 6 - La Porte @ Channelview 10/7 @ 7pm
Week 7 - La Porte @ Baytown Sterling 10/15 @ 7pm
Week 8 - North Shore @ La Porte 10/22 @ 7pm

Welcome to the Orange and White Report!

This is a blog about the La Porte Bulldog's Football team by a fan and graduate of La Porte High School.  A little about myself: I graduated from La Porte High School in 1999 and I love football and go to as many games as I can.  I decided I should start a blog because I have been frustrated by lack of game information in the past.  I want this to be a blog with positive comments about student-athletes with updates on students who have graduated and moved on to bigger and better things.
