Final Score Orange 31 White 7

The Bulldogs wrapped up spring practice with the annual Orange and White Spring Game Thursday night.

The game started out slow with fumbles on each side, one caused by Hoza Scott for White then one caused by Alex Jones for Orange.  What can you say?  The big time players make big time plays.

The game settled in and we saw some great runs from the Orange team James Jacobs (80 yard td run) and Keith Whitely with a the help of some great blocking around the corner had a nice 30-40 yard run.

For the White team, they moved the ball well, but couldn't get the ball in the end-zone until all-district RB Jonathan Lewis broke loose for a 65 yard score near the end.  Some great running was on display from Marlon Greenidge and Diontre Clark for the White team.

The passing game for Orange was clicking with Jordan Jackson completing a big pass to Taejon Wearen  for a 26 yard touchdown.  Jackson also completed some good passes with Jahvey Marks and Garrison Zaborowski including a fade route to Marks for a score.

Also on the Orange team big man Clayton Calhoun got a gift on a deflected pass and returned the interception for a touchdown, a lineman's dream.

Scoring Plays:
Orange - Jordan Jackson to Taejon Wearen 25 yard pass  (7-0)
Orange - Eric Medina 21 yard FG (10-0)
Orange - James Jacobs 80 yard run (17-0)
Orange - Clayton Calhoun 40 yard interception return (24-0)
White - Jonathan Lewis 65 yard run (24-7)
Orange - Jackson to Jahvey Marks 10 yard pass (31-7)

We head into summer strength and conditioning, summer camps and 7 on 7 tournaments with an idea of what to expect in the upcoming season.  Great athletes on both sides of the ball and a season where the Bulldogs goal is to improve on last season with a State Championship.

7on7 Update and Spring Game

La Porte's 7 on 7 team participated in the state qualifying tournament at the Houston Texans practice facility last Sunday and went 2-1 in group play, they did not qualify for the finals due to a 3-way tiebreak scenario.  La Porte started the day with a 20-12 win over Montgomery.

In the second game La Porte dropped a 15-14 decision to Fort Bend Ridge Point after being up 14-7 with little time left.  Ridge Point forced a safety and got the ball down 14-9.  The Panthers scored with seconds remaining to take the win.

In game three La Porte faced Houston Stratford in a must win game and La Porte pulled out a thrilling 42-41 victory in overtime.  However due to 3-way tiebreaker rules (total points scored) La Porte was knocked out of the tournament.

Houston Stratford would go on to win the whole tournament, beating the Woodlands and Clear Creek to win the championship.  La Porte was the only team to beat Stratford in the tournament.

It was a great showing for the Bulldogs and top performers included QB Jordan Jackson, WR Jahvey Marks and RB/WR Taejon Wearen. The defense played great as well with great leadership shown by CB Malik Graves and Safety Keith Whitely. Everybody fought hard and there will be another chance as the team should play in another state qualifying tournament.

The annual Orange and White Spring Game will be played Thursday evening at 6.  Everybody come out and cheer on the boys after all of their hard work this spring!

Congratulations to 2013 Defensive End Alex Jones (McNeese State) and Right Tackle Maurice Morris (Colorado State) on their first scholarship offers.  Many more to come!

Congratulations also to 2013 Running Back Keith Whitely has been offered by San Jose State, UNLV, North Texas and Texas State so far this spring.

Trevor Nelson Class of 2014 Tight End / Linebacker

Highlight Videos: http://www.hudl.com/athlete/503111/highlights/7349910

Trevor Nelson made an immediate in 2011 as a sophomore making first team all 21-5A as a Tight End.  His blocking and great hands put him on the radar for college recruiters.  In 2012 Trevor will be a starting Middle Linebacker replacing three year starter and team leader Chad Sutherland.  Nelson is a football player plain and simple and loves contact.  At 5'11" 215 lbs Trevor has good feet and instincts on the field.  Who can forget those finger tip catches?

I will be getting some more videos and information for returning players over the spring and summer leading up to the 2012 season.

Spring Football Update

La Porte continues their spring workouts this week after 2 weeks of good evaluation and finding depth on both sides of the ball.  There has been plenty of work on the passing game (blocking schemes, route running).  We already know what LP can do on the ground.  The defense looks good (as usual) and all the returning talent gives the upcoming season a special feel going into it.

We bid farewell to Coach Nelms, who took the offensive line position at Clear Springs and thank him for the time he spent at La Porte helping our boys improve and getting them into college over the past 6 years.  The love shown to him by the players and parents says a lot about his character.  Will be sad he has to miss out on that state championship ring next season! Haha.

Class of 2014 Outside Linebacker Hoza Scott has had a eventful spring with offers coming in from Alabama and LSU to go along with his previous offer from Texas A&M.  He was one of the few 2014 prospects from across the nation to be invited to the Rivals 100 5-star camp in Atlanta, Georgia with the best college prospects from around the country. Also Orangebloods.com (University of Texas) writer Jason Howell was at practice last week for an interview with Hoza: http://footballrecruiting.rivals.com/content.asp?CID=1364136

Also Oklahoma writer Josh McCuistion had a write up about Hoza, Keith Whitely and Maurice Morris: http://footballrecruiting.rivals.com/content.asp?CID=1363860

2013 Running back Keith Whitely has picked up scholarship offers from UNLV and San Jose State, with more to come.

Scouts continue to pour into the La Porte practice fields with Texas A&M, Missouri, Baylor, Utah and Navy among many others at practice.

La Porte plays a State Qualifying Tournament in 7on7 this coming Sunday at the Reliant Stadium practice fields.  LP should be the favorite in their group with Montgomery, Dobie and Fort Bend Ridge Point.  I will post the schedule once known.

Spring practice concludes on May 24th at 6pm with the Orange and White game at Bulldog Stadium.

I want to improve communication with fans/parents and get a mailbag going with everyone's questions/comments.  I need feedback!

Spring Football Has Arrived

La Porte finished up day 3 of spring practice today.  Just as we thought, many scouts have been combing the Bulldogs practice field.  Alabama and Oklahoma came through last week and over the last three days we've seen Texas, Texas Tech, North Texas, Louisiana Tech, Stephen F Austin, Lamar and Incarnate World all taking in practice at Bulldog Stadium.

So far there has been an emphasis on more passing (blocking schemes and route running) and adjusting to new personnel as well as looking for some depth at all positions.  The boys have been working their tales off this off-season and looking to do big things next season.

There is a scrimmage this Friday at 3 and the spring game is set for May 24th at 6pm.
