La Porte vs Baytown Sterling Preview (Homecoming)

This Friday at 7pm in La Porte the 3-1 La Porte Bulldogs will face off against the 0-4 Baytown Sterling Rangers in the first game of district 21-5A play.

La Porte is coming off a big 52-14 win over Brazoswood last week in their final pre-district tune up and look to start off district with a bang this week.

Baytown Sterling starts the season 0-4 and has lost 19 consecutive games with two of those coming against the Bulldogs. The Rangers fell last week to Clear Creek 33-7.  However, don't overlook the Rangers as La Porte barely squeaked out a 14-13 game last season after Sterling went for two at the end instead of tying it.

The Rangers defense has struggled mightily through four games, giving up 34 points per game.  The run defense has given up 260 yards per game on average.  Against Clear Creek some improvement was shown against the run, however they allowed 260 yards through the air against the Wildcats. Senior Cornerback Marquis Mitchell has one interception on the season.

The Bulldogs defense got back to business last week against Brazoswood after being hurt by the pass the two previous games.  La Porte held the Buccaneers to 89 yards on 26 attempts to pass.  Against the run the Bulldogs have allowed 123 yards per game.  Sterling will be running and running this week.

Baytown Sterling's option offense has had some success on the ground with running backs Elijah Chenier (206 yards) and Sophomore Dajuan Hill (168 yards).  Quarterback Archie Moyers will be leading the offense in the triple option attack.  Senior Receiver Richard Zeno (6'3") provides a big target whenever the ball is thrown his way.

La Porte's offense mixed the pass and run effectively against Brazoswood and will try to do the same this week.  Junior Quarterback Jordan Jackson (330 yards, 6 touchdowns) leads the passing attack.  Meanwhile on the ground Senior Keith Whitely (439 yards, 2tds) and Junior Jonathan Lewis (464 all purpose yards, 6 tds) lead the way.  Lewis also leads the team in receiving yards with Senior Jahvey Marks and Sophomore Britt Grant Close behind.

To avoid a close game like last season's contest, La Porte must limit the turnovers and penalties.  It will be homecoming this week so everyone come out and support LPHS!

Final La Porte 52 Brazoswood 14

The La Porte Bulldogs made the trip to Freeport last Friday looking to rebound from their big loss to Clear Springs against a tough Brazoswood Buccaneers team from district 24-5A.  Rebound they did with a great victory that was dominated in every phase of the game.

The game started out with a quick punt for both teams, but La Porte would settle in on their second drive.  Big runs by Sophomore Britt Grant, Senior Keith Whitely (173 total yards, 2 scores) and Junior Jonathan Lewis (159 total yards, 2 tds) chewed up the yards until Whitely would cap it off from two yards out and his first touchdown of the season.

Brazoswood would answer back immediately on a wide receiver reverse with Maleek Goins taking the ball around the left side for a 47 yard touchdown to tie the game.

La Porte would go on to score the next 31 points in impressive fashion on offense and defense.  Junior Quarterback Jordan Jackson would hook up with Sophomore Tight End Jaron Dykstra on the next drive to make it 14-7 La Porte.

Then the Bulldogs defense came on strong getting two 3 and outs, followed by Jackson finding Lewis over the top of the defense with a beautiful pass and catch for a 80 yard touchdown.  The Bulldogs lead 21-7.

Senior Alex Jones made the transition to middle linebacker this week and impressed big time.  Brazoswood had a very large running back that never got going with the Dark Side shutting them down.  In the meantime La Porte would add another three points from a Senior Kicker Eric Medina 37 yard field goal.  Another big stop for the defense and Lewis had a run of 29 followed by Whitely scoring again from 26 yards out.  All of this staked the Bulldogs to a 31-7 halftime lead.  The defense forced six 3 and outs in a row to close out the half in very impressive fashion.

The second half saw the Bulldogs taking the foot of the gas a little, but not before a big drive again dominated by the running of Whitely and Lewis put La Porte on the board again with a Junior Tight End Trevor Nelson two yard run.

Brazoswood would get a touchdown just before the end of the third, but too little to late.  It was 38-14 at the end of three.

Lewis would score from nine yards out and Sophomore Receiver/Runner David Terrebonne would get a late touchdown run to put an exclamation point on the La Porte victory.

This was just the tuneup the Bulldogs needed before facing their first district contest against Baytown Sterling for homecoming this week.  We expect a big crowd as usual for the game Friday night!

La Porte at Brazoswood Preview

The 2-1 La Porte Bulldogs will face the 2-1 Brazoswood Buccaneers this Friday at 7pm at Hopper Stadium in Freeport.

The Bulldogs will be trying to rebound from their 32-8 loss to Clear Springs last week and get back in the win column before district play begins next week.

Last week the Buccaneers defeated Alvin 38-17 to improve to 2-1 on the season.  In the second game of the season Brazoswood lost to Angleton 69-28.

La Porte will be looking to improve things on offense after struggling against Clear Springs.  Junior Quarterback Jordan Jackson is expected to start and play a big role this week with his arm to open up running lanes for the trio of Bulldog running backs.  Senior Running Back Keith Whitely took over the team lead in rushing (281 yards) and will be looking to find the end zone for the first time this season.  Junior Running Back Jonathan Lewis (259 yards) will try to find some holes in the Buccaneers front 7.

Brazoswood features a young offense lead by Sophomore Quarterback Keith Washington (338 yards passing, 3 touchdowns) who can also make things happen with his legs.  Junior Running Back Ryan Ross (222 yards, 4 touchdowns) is the team's workhorse running back and also leads the team in receiving.

La Porte's defense showed some life last week as the stats did not indicate what was allowed on the scoreboard.  A strong effort will be needed again this week against a Brazoswood offense that has averaged 32 points per game.  Junior Linebacker Hoza Scott and the Dark Side defense will need to get it in gear for district play.

Brazoswood's defense has shown the ability to stop the pass with Sophomore Safety Maleek Goins picking off two interceptions so far this year.  The Buccaneers have been susceptible to the run giving up over 5 yards per carry so far through three games.

La Porte will need to bring up the intensity this week to pick up the win on the road.

Final Clear Springs 32 La Porte 8

The La Porte Bulldogs were doomed from the beginning last Friday against the Clear Springs Chargers at Bulldog Stadium, falling 32-8.

Clear Springs would win the toss and elect to receive.  The kickoff traveled two yards deep in the end zone and the Chargers ran a quick reverse hand off at the goal line.  Junior Ladamian Coney took the ball and did the rest as he raced down the right side 100 yards into the end zone.

La Porte would get more bad news on their first drive of the night when Junior Quarterback Jordan Jackson, leading the team down the field and inside the 20 yard line, was intercepted and injured making the tackle.  He would not return to the game.  Sophomore Quarterback Nick Brown, who was thought to be out injured, got his uniform on and played very tough through the rest of the night considering the circumstances.

Clear Springs would take the ball down the field again and get a 27 yard strike from Junior Quarterback Zach Cripps to Senior Receiver Byron Jones.  However, on the extra point La Porte would strike by picking up the botched kick and Senior Safety Garrett Green would take it back for two points.  The score was 13-2 Clear Springs with 1:58 left in the first quarter.

Momentum seemed to be changing in the Bulldogs favor as the defense held strong in the second quarter and La Porte drove into Chargers territory as the half was winding down.  However the Bulldogs were held to a Senior Kicker Eric Medina 38 yard field goal as time expired in the half.  La Porte trailed at halftime 13-5.

The second half started and La Porte had a chance to get the game back in control. After trading punts Bulldogs would get the ball at the Chargers 41 yard line and three nice runs from Senior Running Back Keith Whitely (86 yards rushing) would get the ball to 25 before the drive stalled and the Bulldogs player of the game Medina again knocked through a field goal, this one from 42 yards away.  The game was now Clear Springs 13 La Porte 8 with 4:11 left in the 3rd quarter.

Momentum was clearly favoring La Porte and the Bulldogs forced another 3 and out, but Clear Spring had been struggling with their punts.  This one was no different as the ball traveled about 20 yards in the air where it hit a La Porte player in the back and bounce right into Clear Springs Junior Jeremy Hunt's hands.  What momentum the Bulldogs had was lost. Clear Springs would get a nice drive capped by a 11 yard Cripps to Senior Receiver Matt Wymyczak pitch and catch.  Springs would miss the extra point, but the damage was done and the Chargers had a 19-8 lead with :51 left in the 3rd.

La Porte took over after a good kickoff return by Senior Receiver Jahvey Marks to the Springs 48 yard line.  Two plays later it was the Chargers' Hunt again with another big play intercepting the pass.  Springs would waste no time with one play Cripps to Senior Receiver Devin Armstrong, who made a beautiful adjustment on the ball through good coverage, for a 57 yard touchdown.  Now Clear Springs lead 26-8 with :23 second left in the 3rd quarter.

The game would continue to spiral with the Bulldogs fumbling the kickoff and the Chargers recovering.  Sophomore running back Matt Guidry would take the next play 33 yards for the score.  The extra point was no good.  Clear Springs 32-8 with :08 left in the 3rd and three touchdowns scored in the last minute of the 3rd quarter by the Chargers.

That was all she wrote as Clear Springs killed the clock in the 4th quarter to take the much needed win.

La Porte's Eric Medina had a great game averaging 36.5 yards per punt and drilling his two field goal attempts with plenty of room to spare.

La Porte (2-1) will take on Brazoswood at Hopper Field in Freeport this Friday and hope to heal some injuries and get back on track.

Lance Johnson's (@LPdogLJhookem) Random Thoughts

Lance Johnson is a 1990 graduate of La Porte High School.  He's a big time LP football fanatic and these are his thoughts and opinions two games into the season.  I hope to have Lance back each week (or as much as possible) to give his thoughts.

Follow him on Twitter @LPdogLJhookem as he provides some in game analysis.

1.       Let me introduce #12 QB – Jordan Jackson.  This 6’3” Junior, by the time he leaves LPHS, could be one of top passers in the last 20 years for La Porte.  Jackson more than just threw the ball well.  He managed the game like a longtime starter and kept the Bulldog offense running smoothly.  He showed great poise and good accuracy on deep and intermediate passes.  He also knew when to get rid of the ball and also when to throw the ball away when nothing was there.  Through 2 games the only thing I need to see from Jordan is improvement on the fade where he has to show more touch.  Make no mistake, the future is bright for La Porte at the QB position.

2.       Very happy to see the Offensive scheme go back to the Wing-T we saw last year.  I just don’t think this team’s personnel is made for the Flex-Bone.  It can still part of the package as it was vs SoHo, but the overall offense we saw was much more crisp and executed much better.  Coach Taylor has always seemed to be a coach that isn’t hard-headed and will make adjustments during the game and during the year.

3.       Great adjustment by the entire staff on letting #21 SR-RB/DB Keith Whitely settle in on offense and take him off the defense.  He can be used on Defense when the opportunity calls for it, but the LP Offense needs a fresh and healthy Whitely to achieve its long term goals.  Whitely had only 3 carries but averaged a little over 20 yards a carry.

4.       With Whitely being taken off Defense, we saw 2 more changes as a result.  #22 SR-DB Malik Graves moved to Safety alongside #1 JR-DB/QB Victor Holmes.  Malik made the transition pretty easily and by moving Malik to Safety, LP inserted #5 JR-CB John Nelson at the CB spot vacated by Malik.  Malik didn’t take long making an impact at Safety as he intercepted SoHo’s first pass in the 1st qtr.  This setup a quick 7-yard rocket-motion sweep TD run from #24 Soph-RB Britt Grant.

5.       It was good to see #47 JR-LB/TE Trevor Nelson and #32 SR-LB Trevor Mouton on the field together at the ILB spots in LP’s 3-4 Defense.  Both players will need to stay healthy this year as both are very solid ILB’s.  Both Nelson & Mouton play a very technically sound LB and rarely are caught in the wrong position.

6.       #23 JR-RB – Johnathan Lewis had a game he’ll probably remember for a long time.  The Junior RB had 4 TD’s on the night (1 passing – 3 on the ground).  Lewis is a back for LP that has the “house” potential every time he touches it. Great speed and great hands also make him a threat out of the backfield.  Lewis finished the night as the leading rusher with 14 carries for 171 yards.

7.       I thought the OL vs. Clear Brook seemed lethargic and a little out of shape.  I don’t think anyone including players and coaches will disagree that the OL play wasn’t near what it needs or could be.  With that said, I thought the OL played great vs. SoHo and a few players stood out to me.  #61 JR-OT/OG Michael Leagan#55 SR-C Justin King, and #56 SR-OT Joey Garcia.  All 3 of these guys played at a high level and the coaches actually moved Joey Garcia over to L-OG next to L-OT Michael Leagan.  #74 JR-OL Ian Small filled in nicely at the other OT and #70 SR-OL Jared Howard filled in well at the R-OG spot.  This OL will continue to be tweaked as LP's three year starter Maurice Morris returns.

8.       Really nice to see the emergence of #89 JR-TE Michael Rodriguez.  Rodriguez is big target standing about 6’5” and his emergence also helps keep Trevor Nelson on Defense.  Rodriguez had a fantastic one-handed grab in the game for 15 yards as well as a TD catch for 17 yards.  La Porte uses the TE very effectively in their passing game and I think Michael Rodriguez is only scratching the surface on what he is capable.  I look forward to seeing how he develops this year.

9.       It was also nice to see #1 JR-QB/RB/DB Victor Holmes get a carry out of the RB spot.  Vick took a sweep out of the flex-bone late in the game for 78 yard TD. Vick is one of the elite Safeties in the Houston area and I’d expect to hear more and more about his play this year.

10.   I think #25 JR-RB/DB Clifton “BUNK” Figaro has proved in the little times he’s gotten, that he is deserving of more carries.  Besides SR Keith Whitely, “BUNK” seems to run with the most physicality of the RB’s.  Bunk is simply a kid that doesn’t mind contact on either side of the ball and I believe his effort thus far deserves more attempts with the ball in his hands.  Just keep an eye out for #25.

BONUS:  Lastly, I’ve heard good things that we will see the return of #20 JR-OLB/RB Hoza Scott vs. Clear Springs but nothing is for certain.  That will definitely help as Clear Springs has one of the better QB’s in the Houston area and the State of Texas in Zach Cripps.  Cripps plays in the spread and really throws the ball well.  This is a game that will feature 2 really nice looking QB prospects in Jackson for La Porte & Cripps for Clear Springs.

La Porte vs Clear Springs Preview

This Friday at Bulldog Stadium the 2-0 La Porte Bulldogs will face the 0-2 Clear Springs Chargers.

La Porte has pulled off victories over Clear Brook (20-14) and South Houston (55-21) to start the season off on the right track.  The Bulldogs showed lots of improvement in game two against South Houston.

Clear Springs is a annual playoff team from district 24-5A that has had a slow start in 2012 going down to North Shore (47-7) and Dobie (26-14).  Don't underestimate this team's early season start as they have some very good athletes on their roster.

La Porte's offense was in better sync against South Houston.  Junior Running Back Jonathan Lewis has really turned it on early this season with 229 yards rushing (9 yards per carry) and 4 touchdowns on the ground and 46 yards and a score through the air.  Senior Running Back Keith Whitely is right behind him with 195 yards rushing (8 yards per carry).  Junior Quarterback Jordan Jackson (61% completion) has impressed early with 196 yards through the air and 4 touchdowns.  Senior Wide Receiver Jahvey Marks is the Bulldogs leading receiver with 67 yards (16.75 yards per catch) and a touchdown.

Clear Springs features a spread passing attack lead by Junior Quarterback Zach Cripps (391 yards, 2 touchdowns).  He spreads the ball around to lots of different receivers lead by Seniors Byron Jones and Devin Armstrong.  The Chargers have not run the ball much this season and look for that to improve as the season progresses.

La Porte's defense gave up most of their yards in the second half last week to South Houston with the backups in the ballgame.  So far they've allowed 300 yards on the ground and 410 through the air.  Improvement will be needed in coming weeks.  Junior Safety Vic Holmes has stood out with one interception and has made lots of plays.  Senior Nose Tackle Corey Lee has forced two fumbles and controls the middle of the line of scrimmage for the Bulldogs.

Clear Springs defense has been hurt by the run against North Shore (370 yards allowed) and Dobie (270 yards allowed).  They will have a tall task against a La Porte team that has averaged 350 yards per game on the ground over the first two weeks.  Junior Defensive Back Kamron Williams has one interception.

The Chargers will be hungry this week after two disappointing results.  Last season Clear Springs started 0-3 before reeling off 8 straight wins and getting knocked out of the playoffs by Port Arthur Memorial in a tight contest (38-35).

Come on out and support the Bulldogs this week, 7pm Friday night in La Porte!

Final La Porte 55 South Houston 21

The La Porte Bulldogs came out firing last Friday en-route to a 55-21 victory over the South Houston Trojans.

This game was never in doubt as the Bulldogs scored early and often.  Senior Cornerback Malik Graves started things off with an interception on the first play of the game.  A few plays later Sophomore Running Back Britt Grant finished off the drive with a seven yard touchdown run around the right side.

La Porte would continue their early dominance with some good defense, forcing punts. Junior Quarterback Jordan Jackson (120 yards 3 touchdowns) would start the Bulldogs aerial assault with two nice touchdown passes, the first to Junior Tight End Michael Rodriguez, a 17 yard strike.  Then Jackson would find Senior Wide Receiver Jahvey Marks in stride for a 59 yard touchdown.  The ball traveled about 50 yards in the air and hit Marks perfectly.  La Porte was up 21-0 just like that with 6:36 remaining in the 1st quarter.

South Houston would then get on the board with their only score against the first team La Porte defense.  Trojan Junior Quarterback James Davis (316 yards passing, 3 touchdowns) played very well on the night and got South Houston on the board with a five yard pass to Junior Wide Receiver Elton Dyer.  South Houston is a very young squad and should improve as the season progresses.

Still in the first quarter, Jackson was not done and found Junior Running Back Jonathan Lewis for the 17 yard pass down the seam for another Bulldog score.  At the end of the first quarter it was La Porte 28 South Houston 7.

Lewis (174 rushing yards, 4 touchdowns) took over the game at this point as he would score the next three touchdowns on runs of 17, 3 and 75 yards.  La Porte was up 48-7 with 4:58 left in the 3rd quarter.  The Bulldogs emptied the bench with everyone getting in the game.

South Houston's Senior Wide Receiver Torre Daniel (10 catches, 197 yards) made the most of it in the 4th quarter with two touchdowns one a 80 yard catch and run and another from 8 yards out.

La Porte was grinding out the clock, but got loose one more time with Junior Vic Holmes (7 carries, 108 yards) taking the pitch to the right and sprinting 78 yards to pay dirt.

The Bulldogs racked up almost 600 yards of offense with 450 yards on the ground.  This week 2-0 La Porte will be facing 0-2 Clear Springs, who will be visiting Bulldog Stadium for the first time in school history.

La Porte vs South Houston Preview

This Friday at 7pm the La Porte Bulldogs will face the South Houston Trojans at Pasadena Memorial Stadium on Spencer Highway.

La Porte is coming off of a 20-14 victory in a overtime thriller against Clear Brook.  South Houston is 0-1 after a offensive shootout with Humble Summer Creek last week, going down 69-28.

On offense, new South Houston Quarterback Junior James Davis had a great first varsity start last week with 362 yards and two touchdowns through the air.  His favorite target Senior Wide Receiver Torre Daniel recorded 14 catches for 148 yards against Summer Creek.  Junior Receiver Elton Dyer also had a big game with 5 catches for 129 yards and a score.  Expect South Houston to attempt to air it out again this week.

La Porte's offense fared well in week one against Clear Brook, racking up 385 yards of offense.  Senior Running Back Keith Whitely carried the load on the ground with 135 yards on 22 carries.  Junior Quarterback Jordan Jackson fared well with 70% completion percentage on his passes including 91 yards and a touchdown.  Expect to see more running this week from Junior Running Back Jonathan Lewis and Sophomore Britt Grant against the Trojans.

Not much went right for South Houston's defense in their matchup with Summer Creek.  The Trojan defense gave up 600 yards of total offense and 69 points.  345 of those yards were through the air.  South Houston will have to pick up the pace this week to stay with the Bulldogs.

La Porte's defense gave up 271 total yards week one against Clear Brook, who got a couple good drives in the second half.  The pass defense overall played well with Junior Vic Holmes intercepting a pass, but Clear Brook was not much of a passing team.  This week will be a different challenge for the defense.

The Bulldogs will be looking to cut down the turnovers this week after giving it up four times to Clear Brook.

Lets get a big crowd out to Pasadena!  If you cannot attend, the games are broadcast on legacysportsnetwork.com and on their iPhone app.

Final La Porte 20 Clear Brook 14 in Overtime

The La Porte Bulldog overcame a big comeback from the Clear Brook Wolverines last Friday night to win in overtime 20-14.  It was a sloppy game for both teams as the first game of the year usually is.  La Porte turned the ball over 4 times and Clear Brook fumbled 5 times, but got some fortunate bounces and only turned it over 3 times.

After the defense came up big and almost scored twice on the Clear Brook overtime possession, Junior Running Back Jonathan Lewis (12 carries 57 yards) won the game in overtime on a run around the left side untouched to pay-dirt for the 15 yard touchdown run.  Junior Safety Vic Holmes had returned a supposed fumble for a touchdown to start the overtime, only the refs called it back claiming a forward pass.  Then Senior Cornerback Ellis Hutchinson scooped up another Clear Brook fumble and took it across midfield giving the Bulldogs the ball and the chance for Lewis to win it.

La Porte came out of the gates looking like they would dominate.  Clear Brook's Senior Quarterback and primary playmaker Dominique Holmes played only three plays on the first series and never returned to the game.  On the Bulldogs first possession they moved the ball past midfield where they faced a 4th and 1 at the Clear Brook 43 yard line.  Senior Running Back Keith Whitely (22 carries, 135 yards) picked up the first down with a run to the left side.  The Bulldogs would find the end zone on a halfback pass from Sophomore Running Back Britt Grant to Sophomore Wide Receiver David Terrebone for a 36 yard score.  Terrebone was wide open and Grant delivered a perfect pass.  La Porte lead 7-0 with 3:38 left in the 1st quarter.

After a 3 and out for the Bulldog defense, La Porte would drive the ball with a combination of passes, runs and wildcat runs from QB Vic Holmes.  The drive would end with a 3rd and goal pass from Junior Quarterback Jordan Jackson (70% completions and 91 passing yards) to Britt Grant for the touchdown.  Just like that it was 14-0 with La Porte in control and 10:13 left in the half.

Clear Brook would not go down without a fight and Senior Defensive End Osagie Aisueni would prove to be a handful up front getting into the Bulldog backfield and shutting down the La Porte offense with his fellow defenders. The Wolverines would get a good long drive with their running game and backup Quarterback James Ramos would run it in from four yards out to cut La Porte's lead to 14-7 with 7:40 left in the half.

La Porte would get the ball back and drive down the field, but fumbled in the red zone and Clear Brook would recover with the game going to halftime and La Porte leading 14-7.

The third quarter was very sloppy on both sides with not much going on and another La Porte red zone turnover put Clear Brook in position to tie the game with a big 4th quarter drive and a one yard touchdown run from Junior Running Back Derek Simmons to tie the game at 14.

La Porte would drive into Clear Brook territory once again, but a Clear Brook interception would once again have the Wolverines driving the other way.  Brook would make it to the La Porte 40 yard line before the drive would stall and 18 seconds left on the clock.  Clear Brook Senior Kicker Yannis Routsas would line up for a 50 yard field goal attempt into the wind for the upset.  His kick went just wide left and Lewis would score the overtime winner for a tough and gutsy win for the Bulldogs.

La Porte's offense covered 385 yards with 23 first downs on the night, but turnovers were a big problem and something that can be fixed.  The Bulldog defense played well overall, especially in the first half.  La Porte will be looking to improve this coming Friday at 7pm against South Houston at Pasadena Memorial Stadium.
