Week 9 La Porte vs North Shore Preview

This week the 7-1 La Porte Bulldogs face the 8-0 North Shore Mustangs in a very important District 21-5A contest.  The winner will have the inside track on the district championship this season.  Last season La Porte knocked off North Shore for the first time in thirteen tries with a 38-30 victory and clearing the path for a Bulldog district championship.    North Shore High School (4600 students) is over twice the size of La Porte High School (2185 students).  This has contributed to the program's success over the last couple decades. This season the Mustangs will be trying to get back on track towards another district title.

The Mustangs have been strong so far and will look to continue to roll through their schedule on the way to the division one playoffs.  North Shore has scheduled strong opponents in Manvel, Clear Springs and Cinco Ranch along with a tough 31-24 victory over district mate Port Arthur Memorial.

North Shore's great start to the season has been due to an improved defense.  Junior Linebacker Zach Whitely is the team's headliner and is a hard-hitting run-stopper in the Mustangs front seven, he has many college offers already.  Senior Defensive Back Ernest Thomas leads the team with three interceptions.  The team has been very stingy against the run, but has given up some passing yards at times.

La Porte's offense will be trying to find any hole they can in the Mustang defense.  Senior Running Back Keith Whitely (1060 yards rushing, 7 touchdowns), has been a team leader and went over 1000 yards last week against Channelview.  Junior Running Back Jonathan Lewis (800 total yards, 14 touchdowns), has big play ability and will need to break some more this week.  This week will be Junior Quarterback Jordan Jackson's (800 yards passing, 16 touchdowns) biggest test as the Bulldogs try and get some points on the Mustangs. Senior Receiver Jahvey Mark (15 catches, 289 yards, 5 touchdowns) and Sophomore Britt Grant (15 catches, 154 yards, 3 touchdowns) are the teams leading receivers and will need to have big games.  Senior Offensive Tackle Maurice Morris had his first full game action this season against Channelview and should be back in top form this week.

The Mustangs offense is lead by Senior Quarterback Micah Thomas (1470 total yards, 16 touchdowns) is a dual threat on the ground and through the air.  He spreads the ball around to multiple receivers and runners.  Sophomore Tristan Houston has been an explosive playmaker on the ground.  Houston averages 14.7 yards per carry over his 635 yards and 11 touchdowns on the ground.  Senior Running Back Jared Pendleton (400 yards, 10 touchdowns) leads the team in carries.  Junior Kevian Deleon (370 yards receiving, 5 touchdowns) and Senior Herbert Hunter (13 catches, 203 yards) lead the team in receiving.  Both are small and quick.  North Shore has a big, young group of offensive lineman that make the future look very bright.

La Porte's defense is also lead by a Junior, highly recruited linebacker.  Hoza Scott has many major college offers as well and can play in coverage or disrupting the play in the backfield.  Seniors Alex Jones, Corey Lee, Mark Guzman and Justin Pickell lead a front seven that will try to contain the speed of the Mustang's offense and zone read.  Senior Cornerback Ellis Hutchinson and Junior Safety Victor Holmes lead the secondary and will be an important part of stopping North Shore.

Keys to the game:
-La Porte must sustain drives and keep the North Shore offense off the field, keeping the Bulldogs defense as fresh as possible.  The improved passing game will need to show even more improvement this week.
-La Porte's defense must contain the outside runs and have sound tackling.  The Bulldogs are solid up the middle, but will be tested more on the outside this week.
-The Bulldogs cannot turn the ball over and hope to win, on the other hand they must force a couple Mustang turnovers.

A La Porte win would give them a shot at the outright 21-5A title if they beat Port Arthur next week.  A North Shore win would give them district title with tiebreakers over La Porte and Port Arthur, even though the Mustangs play Deer Park next week.

The Bulldogs really need a big crowd this week. Expect lots of media coverage as this is one of the games of the week in Houston.

Postgame La Porte 56 Channelview 14

On a cool and windy night the La Porte Bulldogs strolled into Channelview's brand new stadium and dominated the Channelview Falcons.

The first quarter was all the Bulldogs needed.  After a quick three and out from La Porte's defense, it took two plays for Junior Running Back Jonathan Lewis to put the Bulldogs on the scoreboard with a 50 yard touchdown run.  Another three and out for Channelview and the very next play for La Porte ended in another score as Junior Quarterback Jordan Jackson threw deep to Senior Receiver Jahvey Mark over a defender for a 37 yard touchdown.  Just like that it was 14-0 La Porte only three minutes into the game.

The onslaught continued with more stellar play on defense and Senior Running Back Keith Whitely getting into the action. He scored on back to back drives, one on a 5 yard run and another on a 50 yard scamper.  Whitely finished the game with 158 yards on 11 carries. La Porte ended the first quarter up 28-0 and in complete control of the game.

The second quarter started in the same fashion, Jackson found Sophomore Running Back Britt Grant for a 22 yard touchdown pass.  However, this time Channelview had an answer as Sophomore Running Back Chirs Jefferson had some nice runs and Sophomore Quarterback Brendan McCray capped it off with a 8 yard touchdown run.  La Porte lead 35-7 in the second quarter.

The Bulldogs had a quick answer as two plays later Lewis again broke free, this time with a 60 yard touchdown run.  At the half La Porte lead Channelview 42-7.

La Porte would receive the second half kickoff and march down the field with good runs from Whitely and Lewis.  Lewis again would find the end zone on a one yard run and his third rushing touchdown of the day.  Another three and out for Channelview and Lewis again would get his fourth touchdown of the game on a seven yard run.  Lewis had 135 yards on 8 carries and four of them for scores.

Channelview would add a late score to make it a 56-14 La Porte victory.  This one was never in doubt and the lines controlled the game for La Porte.

On to the next; two big matchups the next two weeks agaisnt North Shore and Port Arthur Memorial to decide the district championship.

La Porte at Channelview Preview

This week the La Porte Bulldogs will face the Channelview Falcons 7pm Friday at the new Channelview football stadium.

La Porte enters the contest with a 6-1 record after a 20-16 win over Deer Park last week.  La Porte has clinched a playoff spot and will look to continue their drive for another 21-5A district championship.

Channelview will try to improve on a 1-7 record to start the season.  The Falcons lost last week to Beaumont West Brook 44-11.  La Porte beat West Brook three weeks ago 52-7.

La Porte's defense comes into this week after a great effort against Deer Park's offense who had averaged almost 400 yards per game.  La Porte held them to 270.  Junior linebacker Hoza Scott had his best game of the season with 12 tackles, a sack and a fumble recovery returned for a touchdown.  Senior nose guard Corey Lee has also been a stand out this season.  Senior linebacker Alex Jones picked up an injury against the Deer and his status is unknown for this weeks game.  Junior Victor Holmes leads the district with three interceptions on the season.

Channelview's defense is lead by Senior Defensive Back Robbie Miller who shares the district lead in interceptions with Holmes with three.  The Falcons have given up almost 300 yards rushing per game in district play so far this season and will be looking to improve this week against a run-heavy La Porte attack.

La Porte's offense lead by Senior Running Back Keith Whitely (902 yards, 5 touchdowns), will look to get the ball rolling this week.  Junior Quarterback Jordan Jackson (695 yards, 14 touchdowns) has only four interceptions on the season.  Thirty percent of Jackson's 48 completions have been touchdown passes.  Junior Running Back Jonathan Lewis (661 total yards, 10 touchdowns), has a knack for getting in the end zone on the ground and through the air.  Senior Receiver Jahvey Mark (246 yards, 4 touchdowns) is the teams leading receiver.  The offensive line will be looking to control the line of scrimmage again this week with Seniors Maurice Morris, Justin King and Tony Briones in form.

Channelview's offense is a pass heavy spread attack.  The Falcons have three quarterbacks with over 50 attempted passes on the season.  The last couple of weeks Sophomore Jalen Hurts has taken some snaps and he is the brother of former standout Averion Hurts.  Sophomore Running Back Chris Jefferson (520 total yards, 3 touchdowns) is the leading rusher and has also caught 14 passes.  The teams offensive leader is  Senior Matthew Williams who plays running back (307 yards rushing, 3 touchdowns) and receiver (28 catches, 231 yards and 3 touchdowns).  The Falcons like to throw short passes and rely on their athletes to make plays.

This weeks game will be at the new Maddry Stadium: 1100 Sheldon Road Channelview, Tx 77530.

Let's get on the road and support our Bulldogs to victory!

Final La Porte 20 Deer Park 16

The 52nd meeting between the La Porte Bulldogs and the Deer Park Deer did not dissapoint last Friday as the Bulldogs pulled off a 20-16 thriller in a sold out Bulldog Stadium.

La Porte overcame a early 13-0 deficit as Deer Park came out firing on all cylinders.  The Bulldogs punted after their opening possession. Deer Park used a 90 yard, 13 play four and a half minute drive to get on the board as Deer Senior Running Back Noah Cano scored on a two yard run.  Deer Park would miss the extra point after a bad snap.  It was Deer Park leading 6-0 with 4:51 left in the 1st quarter.

The Bulldogs would move the ball well on their next drive a 28 run from Junior Running Back Jonathan Lewis got La Porte into Deer Park territory, however again the drive stalled and a 50 yard field goal attempt came up a little short.

As the game moved into the second quarter Deer Park was again on the move and two consecutive La Porte pass interference penalties moved the Deer deep into Bulldog territory.  Deer Park again would find the end zone as Junior Quarterback Connor Means ran the option and kept it himself for the seven score and Deer Park was up 13-0 with 8:41 left in the first half.

The teams would trade punts and La Porte would take over at the Deer Park 35 yard line after a great punt return from Senior Running Back Keith Whitely.  The Bulldogs changed to a wildcat formation for a couple plays to get down to the 21 yard line.  Junior Quarterback Jordan Jackson got La Porte on the board with a beautiful 21 yard pass to Lewis who was wide open in the end zone.  However they could not convert on the extra point.  It was Deer Park 13 and La Porte 6 with 2:19 left in the 2nd quarter.

La Porte's defense came alive forcing a 3 and out.  Whitely again with a great punt return ran it back 94 yards for the touchdown, however a illegal block made it Bulldogs ball at the Deer 30 with the clock running down in the half.  La Porte took a shot at the endzone on a halfback pass and got a pass interference penalty moving the ball to the 20.  Then with eight seconds remaining Jackson threw a fade into the corner of the end zone for Junior Hoza Scott.  Scott leaped over the Deer defenders and snagged a 20 yard pass with three seconds left in the half.  La Porte tied it up going to halftime with a great 5 minute stretch of play.  The Bulldogs had 10 penalties for 91 yards in the half, yet were able to claw their way back into it.

The Deer would get the second half kickoff, but Senior Cornerback Ellis Hutchinson would get an interception and keep the momentum on the Bulldogs side.  However the Bulldogs were forced to punt.  Deer Park got their ground game going with an 11 play drive and connected on a Zane Gonzalez 30 yard field goal to make the score Deer Park 16 La Porte 13 with 5:16 left in the third quarter.

Midway through the 4th quarter and the La Porte offense was moving the ball into Deer territory.  The drive stalled and La Porte missed the 31 yard field goal attempt with 4:42 remaining in the game.

Hoza Scott would again come up big.  Deer Park ran up the middle on the next play and Scott knocked the ball from the running back's arms, recovered it, and ran it back for the touchdown all in one motion.  It was a game changing play and the Bulldogs would never look back on their way to a 20-16 hard fought victory.

The Bulldogs had zero penalties in the second half.  The running game was impressive lead by the line up front averaged 5.6 yards per carry.  On the other side the defense held the Deer to only 3.8 yards per carry after the Deer came into the game gashing opposing defenses.

Another big victory for La Porte in the rivalry over Deer Park.  Even more important is another big district 21-5a victory.  La Porte and North Shore are the only two remaining undefeated teams in district play.

La Porte will face Channelview this Friday at 7pm at their new stadium in Channelview.

La Porte vs Deer Park Preview

The La Porte Bulldogs and the Deer Park Deer renew their storied rivalry again this week.  This season it is again a district contest after taking a two year hiatus where the teams were forced to play out of district.  The Bulldogs lead the all time series 26-24-1, winning the 50th all time match-up last season 34-31 in an overtime thriller.  La Porte enters the contest coming off of their bye week with a 5-1 record and 2-0 in 21-5A.  Deer Park is 4-3 and last week beat Beaumont West Brook 58-28.  The Bulldogs beat West Brook 52-7 the week before.

This season La Porte has a much more explosive offense.  Senior Running Back Keith Whitely (782 yards, 5 tds) and Junior Jonathan Lewis (447 yards, 7 tds).  have definitely picked up where they left off last season, they have been a dynamic 1-2 punch on the ground for the Bulldogs.  Junior Quarterback Jordan Jackson (638 yards, 12 touchdowns) has provided a new wrinkle to the offense this season as he has shown the ability to throw deep with good accuracy.  He has built a great connection with Senior Wide Receiver Jahvey Mark (244 yards, 4tds) who has really turned it up the last few weeks.  The offensive line is rounding into shape and have dominated the last two games.  La Porte hopes to have Senior Tackle Maurice Morris back this week.

La Porte's defense is rounding into shape after a thrashing of Beaumont West Brook last game.  The Bulldogs are rounding into shape and have forced 12 turnovers on the season.  Junior Safety Victor Holmes has three interceptions to lead the team and is an explosive playmaker when on offense or special teams.  Junior Linebacker Hoza Scott is a game changing athlete and look for him to show up in the big game this week.  Senior Alex Jones and Junior Trevor Nelson have locked down the two inside linebacker roles and have shown great improvement the last three games.  On the defensive line Senior Nose Tackle Corey Lee has been in dominant form so far this season, lined up alongside Senior Mark Guzman and Junior Lane Albertson, the line has used their quickness to disrupt in the backfield.  Senior Ellis Hutchinson and Junior John Nelson will have the tall task of keeping up with Deer Park's great receivers this week and will look forward to the challenge I'm sure.

Deer Park's offense has been dynamic this season.  Junior Quarterback Connor Means (1058 yards, 14 tds) has filled the Deer hole at QB after losing a three year starter to graduation.  Means is good on the ground as well, he's the teams 2nd leading rusher.  He has explosive and experienced receivers to get the ball to in Seniors Eric Luna (333 yards, 3 tds) and Josh Rutherford (181 yards, 2 tds).  Senior Running Back Noah Cano (791 yards, 11 tds) has provided the Deer the balanced offense they need.

The Deer defense has given up some points this season (28 per game), but will come to play in the rivalry game.  Sophomore Eric Benavidez leads Deer Park with two interceptions.  Senior Vincent Vega has plenty of experience playing against the Bulldogs and is a standout linebacker for Deer Park.

Keys to the game:
-The big matchup is La Porte's defense against Deer Park's offense.  The Bulldogs front 7 must pressure up front against the running of Cano as well as pressuring Means, not giving the Deer a lot of time to find an open man and forcing them into a one-dimensional offense.
-On offense, La Porte must show ability to pass to open up the run.  Last season Deer Park played with 8-9 players in the box.  If the Bulldogs can force Deer Park to drop more into coverage, that will really open up the ground game.
-In La Porte vs Deer Park, whoever controls the line of scrimmage usually comes away with the victory.  The big men up front will be very important to watch this week.
-La Porte must keep their composure.  Physically and mentally tough football will get them a victory.

As of Wednesday morning most reserved seating was sold out.  I expect the game will end up being a sell out, as usual.  The atmosphere is sure to be amazing and expect a intense, emotional game for one of the best rivalries in Texas football.

La Porte vs Beaumont West Brook Highlights

Varsity 52-7

Freshmen A 48-6

Final La Porte 52 Beaumont West Brook 7

The La Porte Bulldogs came one step closer to clinching a playoff spot with a dominating 52-7 victory over the Beaumont West Brook Bruins last Saturday.

La Porte would receive the opening kick and start at their own 28.  Five consecutive running plays including big runs from Junior Jonathan Lewis, Senior Keith Whitely and Sophomore Britt Grant moved the ball inside the Bruins' 30.  However the drive stalled and the Bulldogs faced a 4th down and 6.  The Bulldogs elected to go for it and the move paid off as Junior Quarterback Jordan Jackson found Sophomore Receiver David Terrebonne in the back of the end zone for the touchdown.  It was a great throw and an even more impressive catch from Terrebonne with a defender draped all over him.  The early lead would only increase quickly.

After the ensuing kickoff the Bruins would get some help from Bulldogs penalties to move to midfield, however three offensive plays and it was time for West Brook to punt.  La Porte took over at their own 20 and again gashed the Bruins run defense.  Lewis ran for 13 yards, followed by Whitely going 42 yards on the next two carries.  Lewis then capped it off with a 25 yard run up the middle in which he made a great cut to shred the West Brook D.  La Porte was up 14-0 quickly with 7:12 left in the 1st quarter.

La Porte's Darkside defense again caused havoc in the Bruin's backfield, getting another three and out with West Brook going negative three yards in those three plays.  The La Porte offense was forced to punt, but the D again held West Brook to negative yardage on the next drive.

La Porte took over at the Bruin 26 to start the 2nd quarter.  One play was all that was needed as Jackson found Senior Receiver Jahvey Mark for a 26 yard score on a beautiful pitch and catch over the Bruin secondary.  The Bulldogs lead 21-0 with 11:44 left in the 2nd quarter.

West Brook Senior standout receiver Ladarious Spearman would get a 30 yard catch on the ensuing drive, but the Bulldog defense would again force a punt.  La Porte would make their first mistake with a fumble on their next possession, but the defense would pick up the slack with Whitely getting a interception inside West Brook territory.

La Porte would again give up a fumble and again the defense, this time Junior Safety Victor Holmes would get an interception.  The Bulldogs got the ball with 3:05 left in the half.  Whitely's running and a big pass again to Mark would get the ball inside the 10 yard line.  Jackson dropped back and found Junior Hoza Scott in the back corner of the end zone on the fade rout for a four yard touchdown pass.  La Porte went into halftime with a 28-0 lead.

The second half looked a lot like the first half.  The Bruins would hold the ball a little longer thanks to a fake punt.  Eventually the Bulldog defense forced a punt and Whitely would go to work again.  A 62 yard run on first down where he looked like he had a rocket strapped to his back down to the nine yard line.  Whitely would then take it in from nine yards out and a 35-0 Bulldog lead.

The Bulldogs forced a turnover on downs and Jackson again would hook up with Mark, this time for a 49 yard score in which Mark made a brilliant one handed catch behind the defense.  42-0 with 5:52 left in the 3rd.

Another Bulldog interception, this time for Senior Safety Garrett Green.  The La Porte offense stalled out around the West Brook 40 yard line.  However with a little wind behind them, Senior Kicker Eric Medina lined up for a 57 yard field goal attempt.  Medina nailed a 55 yarder last year for the school record. He would break it again this time as he drilled it with a few yards to spare. Congratulations to him for his hard work paying off.

Lewis would score again later on a two yard plunge that made it 52-0 Bulldogs.  West Brook was able to capitalize on the La Porte second team D and get a short touchdown run with little time left.

Shout out to the La Porte offensive and defensive lines who left no doubt about this one.  The boys played as a team and dominated their opponent.  Whitely ended up with 193 yards on 16 carries.  Jackson had 141 yards passing and four touchdowns.  Mark had 96 yards receiving and two scores.

La Porte will be off this weekend before coming home next week to face Deer Park in the annual grudge match of all grudge matches.  Rest up this week, because next week is time to turn it up boys!
