Last Minute La Porte Touchdown Defeats Deer Park

Another chapter in the storied rivalry of the La Porte Bulldogs and the Deer Park Deer was written last Friday night as La Porte came through with a 10-6 victory at a packed Bulldog Stadium.  This years game sold out Thursday morning and the crowd was hopping on both sides thirty minutes before game time.  The Bulldogs would thrill the home side, scoring a touchdown with 12 seconds remaining to take the victory.

It was scoreless at halftime after a defensive struggle in the first half.  After a quick stop from the Deer defense early in the first quarter, Deer Park quickly moved into La Porte territory mixing the run and pass.  However, on third and thirteen from the Bulldogs 30 yard line La Porte Senior Safety Bryson Rogers stepped in front of a Deer Park receiver and intercepted the pass stopping the Deer in their tracks.

La Porte would have a decent drive of their own, getting to the Deer Park 25 yard line before penalties pushed the Bulldogs back and forced them to punt.  The Bulldogs Senior Punter Kyle Jobe would get off a nice punt, pinning Deer Park back to the 2 yard line. As the first quarter ended the game remained 0-0.

La Porte Senior Lineman Clayton Calhoun dominated when put it on defense and swatted a Deer Park pass to start the second quarter, however he was injured on the punt and did not return to the game.

Both teams continue to trade punts. La Porte found the end zone on their punt return only to be called back due to penalty. Bulldog Senior Running Back Britt Grant weaved through Deer Park running 63 yards to the end zone, but the referees called holding and brought it back.  On the ensuing series La Porte was again forced to punt and Deer Park fumbled the punt return putting the Bulldogs in prime position to take the lead just before halftime.  La Porte drove to the Deer Park 5 yard line where the Deer defense stood tall and stopped the Bulldogs.  La Porte's 19 yard field goal attempt was blocked by Deer Park and the game headed to halftime in a 0-0 deadlock.

The third quarter would see Deer Park get on the board first. The Deer drove down the field in a long, time consuming 16 play drive that took almost 8 minutes off the clock.  The drive was capped by a Deer Park 15 yard touchdown pass from Cameron Thompson to Duncan McVey in what seemed to be good La Porte coverage.  The ball was threaded between three Bulldog defenders.  The extra point was no good.  Deer Park lead 6-0 with 4:36 left in the 3rd quarter.

A big scramble from La Porte Sophomore Quarterback Austin Upshaw would pick up 23 yards and a first down on the next drive.  A pass to Bulldog Senior Receiver David Terrebonne put La Porte in Deer Park territory.  Again Upshaw would get a big 16 yard run on the next play.  The Bulldogs drive would stall at the Deer Park 7 yard line and set up a Senior Kicker Ceasar Silva 24 yard field goal to cut the lead to Deer Park 6 La Porte 3 going into the fourth quarter.

Deer Park would start the fourth quarter with another long drive, moving down the La Porte 25 yard line where the Deer faced 4th and 6.  Deer Park went for it all, throwing to the end zone, but La Porte Junior Cornerback DeVohn White broke up the play at the goaline and La Porte took over.

Deer Park forced a quick three and out on La Porte and the turnovers would begin to rain down.  First La Porte got a interception on another big play from DeVohn White, returning it to the Deer Park 18 yard line.  On the next play La Porte fumbled on a perfectly placed helmet to ball shot by Deer Park.

The teams again traded punts as the Bulldogs were running out of time and opportunities to get the last score they needed.  Deer Park received a La Porte punt with 3:18 left in the fourth quarter and just needing a first down to run out the clock.  La Porte Senior Defensive Tackle Denaus Ferguson came up huge on 4th and 2, stopping Deer Park for a one yard gain and giving the Bulldogs one final opportunity with 2:17 left and the ball at their own 34.

What happened on the last drive was a clutch display by Sophomore Austin Upshaw, going 4 for 4 including a 30 yard post pattern to David Terrebonne on the first play of the drive.  Then a nine yard pass to Junior Nathan Redd.  Upshaw would keep it up the middle for two yards on the next play.    Then he found Senior Receiver Chris Green for nine yards.  Upshaw passed nine yards to Sophomore Terrel Bernard to the Deer Park 8 yard line.  Upshaw ran up the middle to the five yard line with time ticking down around 30 seconds left.  Bernard would take the hand off to the two yard line with about 18 seconds left.  Hurrying up to the line Upshaw turned and handed off to Senior James Jacobs who followed the blocks of Sophomore Ryder Rae and Junior Tristan Lozano into the end zone for the game winning touchdown with 12 seconds to play.  La Porte lead 10-6 and pulled off a great comeback victory.

Senior Tyler Erskine came up with the tackle on the ensuing kickoff with seven seconds remaining.  Deer Park's pass would be incomplete as time expired and La Porte pulled out the 10-6 victory.

There was an amazing show of sportsmanship after the final whistle as La Porte Senior Chance Moreno consoled a stunned Deer Park Senior offensive lineman Austin Hill who they had faced each other all night.  This is the spirit of this rivalry. There is talk all week and back and forth from the crowds all night, but this is what truly makes this the best rivalry in Texas.  Amazing game from Deer Park and great win for the La Porte Bulldogs.

Final The Woodlands 49 La Porte 3

It was a tough night for the La Porte Bulldogs as they traveled north to face The Woodlands Highlanders last Friday, falling 49-3.  La Porte fell to 2-2 in the pre-district schedule.  The real games begin this week against Deer Park in the big rivalry match.

La Porte started the game adjusting to the size and speed of The Woodlands.  After a La Porte punt The Woodlands quickly moved into La Porte territory with a 17 yard wide receiver screen.  However the Bulldog Defense came up with a big play two plays later as Junior Corner Back Vincent Chachere intercepted the Highlander's pass on a tipped ball.

The Woodlands defense swarmed to the ball on La Porte's second drive and stopped them quickly.  La Porte again punted, this time the Highlanders Senior Running Back Patrick Carr would take the hand-off to the house for a 73 yard score.  Carr has multiple scholarship offers from teams around the country including Arkansas, Arizona State and Texas Tech.  The Woodlands had the lead 7-0 with seven minutes remaining in the first quarter and would never look back.

La Porte however threatened on their next drive, the best of the night. Mixing the pass and the run the Bulldogs marched 55 yards in 14 plays and running seven minutes of the clock, mixing the run and pass.  La Porte Sophomore Quarterback Austin Upshaw completed his first nine passes of the game.  The Bulldogs had to settle for a Senior Kicker Ceasar Silva 31 yard field goal. The Bulldogs trailed 7-3 at the end of the 1st quarter.

Carr put The Woodlands on the board again to start the second quarter with a 22 yard touchdown run.  The wheels fell off quick for the Bulldogs.  After fumbling the next kickoff, the Highlanders score on three consecutive passes, the first two were called back by penalty.  All of a sudden La Porte found themselves in a big hole 21-3 with 8:35 left in the 2nd quarter against one of the best defenses in the state.

The Woodlands would add another touchdown before the half going into the locker room with a 28-3 lead on another Carr touchdown run.  Carr was pulled early and finished the game with 8 carries for 127 yards and three touchdowns.

La Porte's defense made some adjustments at the half and came out strong in the 3rd quarter, forcing three punts in a row.  However what was left of the momentum disappeared when The Woodlands Junior Antoine Winfield Jr, son of the three time NFL pro bowler Antoine Winfield, fielded a La Porte punt and broke at least 10 tackles running it back 73 yards for a touchdown.  La Porte trailed 35-3 at the end of the 3rd.

The Woodlands would add two garbage time touchdowns in the fourth quarter, sending La Porte to a 49-3 loss.

The real games begin now for the Bulldogs as the familiar rival Deer Park comes to La Porte Friday this week in a huge district 21-6A battle.  There is a big pep rally at Bulldog Stadium Wednesday evening at 6pm.  Everyone enjoy Deer Park week, one of the best rivalries in the world!

La Porte Overcomes Clear Springs With Strong First Half

The La Porte Bulldogs improved to 2-0 at home this season and 2-1 overall with a 43-34 defeat of the Clear Springs Chargers at Bulldog Stadium last Friday.  It was the first win for the Bulldogs in three games against the Chargers. Lead by Senior Running Back Britt Grant who is averaging 181 yards per game on the ground through three games (544 yards, 7 touchdowns), La Porte took the lead and never looked back.

La Porte's kickoff return team has been stellar this season and again would start the Bulldogs off with great field position.  Grant would return the opening kick to near midfield.  Six plays and all of them runs would get the Bulldogs in the endzone on a 3 yard run by Grant.  La Porte lead 7-0 with 9:11 left in the 1st.

The defense would start out strong in the first half as well.  Junior Linebacker Nathan Redd would storm the backfield twice on Clear Spring's first series for two sacks forcing the Chargers to punt.  The Bulldogs responded with another six play scoring drive.  Senior Receiver David Terrebonne who had a huge game started the drive with 17 yards on a sweep.  La Porte faced 3rd and 14 when Sophomore Quarterback Austin Upshaw (141 yards passing, 94 yards rushing) found Britt Grant out of the backfield for a first down.  Grant (22 carries 189 yards, 3 tds) would cap the drive with his second touchdown of the first quarter and a 14-0 Bulldog lead with 5:03 left in the 1st.

On the next drive Clear Springs faked a punt and got into La Porte territory. Senior Linebacker Chance Moreno stuffed the drive with two sacks of his own and the Bulldogs would force a punt and take over at their own 26 yard line.  La Porte would march down the field again, this time on the legs of Sophomore Terrel Bernard, Upshaw and Terrebonne.  However the drive would stall due to penalty and the Bulldogs missed a field goal.

La Porte's defense stood tall again.  Bulldog Junior Linebacker Eric Kendzior had a big tackle for loss on the Chargers running back stalling the Clear Springs drive again.  La Porte started at their own 34 yard line and wasted no time.  Grant rushed for 24 yards, then Upshaw for 8.  Britt Grant would cap his huge first half with his third touchdown, this one a winding 34 yard run.  The extra point was blocked.  La Porte lead 20-0 with 7:06 left in the 2nd.

The last seven minutes of the first half saw a frenzy of offense from both teams.  Clear Springs Senior Quarterback and Bulldog nemesis Matt Guidry, who was switched from running back due to injury began to settle in at his new position.  He weaved through the Bulldog defense for a 62 yard touchdown run.  Clear Springs cut the La Porte lead to 20-7 with 6:32 left in the half.

The Chargers attempted a onside kick and were not successful giving the Bulldogs good field position again.  Upshaw would find Terrebonne (5 catches 110 yards 2 touchdowns on the game) for a 43 yard touchdown on a wide receiver screen play.  He was lead to the end zone by a convoy of big bodies including Senior Offensive lineman Clayton Calhoun and Junior Logan Jackson.  La Porte tried a two point conversion and missed.  The score was 26-7 Bulldogs with 3:19 left in the half.

The flurry would continue.  Clear Springs found the end zone again with Guidry running a zone read play and finding his way in with 38 seconds left. La Porte had a answer though. The squib kick landed in the hands of La Porte Senior Tyler Erskine who returned the ball to the Chargers 45 yard line. Two plays later Upshaw rolled out to the right and found Terrebonne again, this time over the top of the Clear Springs defense for a 41 yard score to end the half.  La Porte lead at halftime 33-14.

Clear Springs had the better of the second half, but it was too little too late.  La Porte Senior kicker Cesar Silva added a 24 yard field goal in the fourth quarter. La Porte Senior Fullback James Jacobs would add a late insurance touchdown on a 3 yard run to seal the game.  La Porte beat Clear Springs 43-34.

Next up we have a road trip coming.  This time to The Woodlands and Woodforest Stadium on Friday at 7:30.  The Woodlands Highlanders are coming off a huge win over the Katy Tigers last Friday 24-7.  It will be the toughest test of the season so far for the Bulldogs.

Final Bellaire 31 La Porte 28

The La Porte Bulldogs fell in a hole they could not recover from in a 31-28 loss to the Bellaire Cardinals last Saturday.  There were many good things to take away from the first loss of the season.  The defense played well, although the score did not show it.  The Bulldogs running game on offense is in midseason form lead by the offensive line and very good athletes in the backfield.

This one started out about as rough as you could start a game.  La Porte received the opening kick for a touchback, followed by a fumble on the first play from scrimmage recovered by the Cardinals at the 6 yard line.  Two plays later and Bellaire had a 7-0 lead after a 6 yard touchdown run with 11:22 left in the 1st quarter.

It got worse.  La Porte was forced to punt after a bad exchange out of the shotgun on 3rd and 1.  Bellaire wasted no time 4 plays later scoring on a 23 yard pass.  Bellaire lead 14-0 with 8:20 left in the first.

After a nice 19 yard pass from Sophomore QB Austin Upshaw to Senior Fullback James Jacobs, came another fumble out of the shotgun recovered by Bellaire.  This time the Bulldog defense stepped up with three tackles for loss in a row forcing Bellaire to kick a 41 yard field goal which went through the uprights.  After a disastrous 1st quarter the score was Bellaire 17 La Porte 0.

The second quarter began with La Porte coming to life.  A 8 play 91 yard drive capped by Senior Running Back Britt Grant's 13 yard touchdown run.  Grant had 15 carries for 180 yards and two scores on the night.  This score made it Bellaire 17 La Porte 7 with 11:15 to go before halftime.

Bellaire responded quickly with a 52 yard pass that set up a 9 yard touchdown run.  Bellaire was back up by 17 with 8:39 left in the 2nd quarter 24-7.

The Bulldogs never gave up, running the ball seven consecutive plays including a 37 yard run by Britt Grant.  Upshaw capped the drive with a 9 yard run behind a huge block from Senior lineman Clayton Calhoun.  Upshaw rushed the ball 14 times for 239 yards on the night with 2 scores.  A huge game for the Sophomore quarterback.  LP was back in it 24-14 going into halftime.

Bellaire came out in the second half in their hurry up offense quickly moving in side the La Porte 10 yard line.  A bad exchange between the quarterback and running back put the ball on the turf and La Porte recovered.  Four plays later Britt Grant busted through a hole and ran the ball 63 yards for the touchdown right up the middle.  Bellaire still lead La Porte 24-21 with 7:17 left in the 3rd.

Bellaire would bounce right back and make a 59 yard run of their own with their Quarterback hurdling La Porte defenders.  Bellaire was back up 31-21 with 4:51 left in the 3rd.

Back and forth we went. La Porte Junior DeVohn White would get a huge return on the kickoff of 50 yards.  Upshaw would do the rest on the next play cutting back twice and running it in from 41 yards out.  La Porte was down 31-28 going into the tense 4th quarter.

The third quarter ended with Upshaw again cutting loose going 80 yards to the end zone, however the ball was jarred loose by the Bellaire defender.  The referee was trying to catch up to the play and judged that it was a fumble and that turned it over for a touchback and Bellaire's ball.  It was a very close call and would have given La Porte the lead.

Senior Safety Kevin Busby picked up a interception in the 4th quarter and he was assisted by a huge hit Senior Defensive Tackle Denaus Ferguson landed on the quarterback.  La Porte could not get anything going and punted the ball back to Bellaire.  With one final chance Bellaire intercepted a La Porte pass with 1:28 left to seal the victory for the Cardinals.

Everything that could happen did.  A awful 1st quarter, a shoot-out 2nd and 3rd quarter and a defensive battle in the 4th.

This week La Porte will take on the 1-1 Clear Spring Chargers at Bulldog Stadium Friday at 7pm.  Come support the Dogs and see some exciting action!

Final La Porte 40 Clear Brook 14

The 2014 La Porte Bulldogs season kicked off with a bang last Friday against the Clear Brook Wolverines.  The Bulldogs impressed everyone in many different ways en route to a 40-14 win.

The Bulldogs would receive the opening kick with Senior Running Back Britt Grant getting a huge runback of 50 yards to the Clear Brook 33 yard line.  This would open up a big advantage in the field position battle.  The Bulldogs drive stalled after going for it on 4th and short.  Two plays later the Bulldogs defense would make a big play with Junior Defensive End Zach Bowen causing a fumble in the backfield in which La Porte recovered.  The Bulldogs drove down behind that big offensive line and scored their first touchdown of the season with Sophomore Terrel Bernard taking the ball in from 4 yards out.  La Porte lead 7-0 with 8:41 left in the 1st quarter.

La Porte would continue the field position dominance as the ensuing kickoff was fumbled by Clear Brook, but they recovered deep in their own territory after Senior Safety Wyatt Stevenson flew down the field with the rest of the Bulldogs. A few plays later and the La Porte front seven were in the backfield sacking the Clear Brook quarterback for a safety.  La Porte lead 9-0 with 6:32 left in the 1st.

A mistake on the punt team would set up Clear Brook for their first score.  The Wolverines scored on a one yard QB keeper making the score La Porte 9 Clear Brook 7 with 4:18 left in the 1st.

La Porte wasted no time getting the ball back to the end zone.  A 15 yard run from Sophomore Quarterback Austin Upshaw followed by a 38 yard gain from Britt Grant put the Bulldogs inside the Clear Brook 20.  Terrel Bernard would get the carry again from 3 yards out for the touchdown.  La Porte lead 16-7 with 2:51 left in the first.

The second quarter would start off with more dominance on the offensive line.  Seniors Tyler Boudreaux and Tight End Jaron Dykstra along with Junior Logan Jackson and Sophomore Ryder Rae were just a few of the blockers controlling the line up front.  Senior Running Back Kevin Busby would cash it in this time on a 24 yard sweep to the left side.  Senior Wide Receiver Chris Green threw a huge open field block to open up the run. La Porte lead 23-7 with 10:13 left in the half.

Senior Kicker Cesar Silva, who was perfect on extra points on the night, would add a 19 yard field goal on the next possession making the Bulldog lead 26-7 with 4:50 left to halftime.

La Porte had their one lapse of the night on defense allowing the Wolverines to score on a 31 yard pass with 1:51 left in the half making it 26-14 LP.

The Bulldogs two minute drill looked easy to close the half.  Starting with a 20 yard pass from Senior Quarterback Nick Brown to Senior Wide Receiver David Terrebonne. A 10 yard run from Britt Grant and a 21 yard pass from Brown to Terrebonne would get La Porte inside the 5.  Grant would cap it off with 29 seconds left in the half.  La Porte lead 33-14 in a very high scoring first half.

The second half would be a defensive battle.  La Porte's defense lead by Senior Zach Love, Junior Linebackers Eric Kendzior and Nathan Redd and Sophomore Terrel Bernard sniffed out the Clear Brook option attack all night.  The defensive line lead by Senior Denaus Ferguson, Bowen, Josh DeLeon lived in the Wolverine backfield.  Bernard would add a interception off a tipped pass from Junior Cornerback DeVohn White. The secondary lead by White, Senior Safety Bryson Rogers and Junior Cornerback Vincent Chachere helped contain the outside run plays the Wolverines attacked them with. The defense would shut down Clear Brook the whole second half.

La Porte would cap the game in the fourth quarter with a Britt Grant 40 yard touchdown run and the backups would come in.  La Porte won the season opener in a big way 40-14.

This week La Porte will take on Bellaire at Butler Stadium in Houston on Saturday at 6pm.  This team is worth the watch and play exciting football.

Bellaire is coming off a 52-27 loss to Fort Bend Elkins.  Bellaire runs a spread offense and will put out a challenge for the Bulldog defense.
