The La Porte Bulldogs battled the rain and the Brazoswood Buccaneers to a 45-14 victory last Friday night. Brazoswood made the drive from Southern Brazoria county to La Porte in one of the few games in the Houston area that was not cancelled or delayed.
The Bulldogs would get on the board first. Senior Linebacker Henry Garcia blocked a Brazoswood punt giving La Porte great field position. Penalties would hurt the LP drive and they faced a 4th and 16 at the 34 yard line. The Bulldogs would go for it and Senior Quarterback Jordan Jackson would not let them down, rolling to the right throwing a strike to Junior Wide Receiver David Terrebonne on a wheel route. The Bulldogs lead 7-0 with 6:56 left in the 1st quarter.
La Porte would again find the end zone early in the second quarter after a great punt by Junior Kyle Jobe. The Bulldogs defense dominated all night and this time it was Freshman Linebacker Terrell Bernard who has shown a great deal of promise early in the season for La Porte. Bernard picked off the Brazoswood pass in the flat and return it 11 yards for a touchdown. La Porte lead 14-0 going into halftime with a off and on heavy downpour making sloppy conditions in the first half. Before going into halftime the Bulldogs had one last play from the Buccaneers 32 yard line. Jackson took the snap and threw to Terrebonne on a crossing route from the right who then pitched to Junior Britt Grant who immediately pitched to Senior Fullback Trevor Nelson who made it all the way to the 5 yard line before being pushed out of bounds
The second half came with La Porte firing on all cylinders scoring 24 points and putting the game out of reach. Britt Grant would strike first from 33 yards out. He ran to the right and there was no hole, so he turned and switched fields running around the Brazoswood defense to the end zone.
The Bulldog defense would come up strong once again. On the ensuing punt Grant fielded the ball at the LP 20 and returned it to the Brazoswood 35 setting up La Porte again. After four strong runs with those big offensive lineman, Senior Tackle Michael Leagan, Juniors Clayton Calhoun and Tyler Boudreaux, Sophomores Logan Jackson and Luis Atilano opening up the holes, the Bulldogs drove to the seven yard line where Jackson would find the Fullback Nelson on a 7 yard pass in the flat. Boudreaux threw a great block to keep Jackson clean on the play. La Porte lead 28-0 with 7:49 left in the 3rd quarter.
The Bulldogs would catch the Buccaneers napping on the ensuing kickoff. Junior Cesar Silva kicked off into a hole in the middle of the return team where the ball bounced and Seniors Lane Albertson and John Nelson would recover. The rain was coming down hard now and La Porte would settle for a Silva 26 yard field goal. The score was 31-0 La Porte after a whirlwind 3rd quarter.
Brazoswood would get on the board twice in the 4th quarter against many Bulldog backups. Senior LP Safety Victor Holmes would take one of the kickoffs around the left side for 78 yard touchdown.
On the night the Bulldogs defense was smothering, holding the Buccaneers to 33% passing and less than 3 yards per carry until the fourth quarter. The La Porte fans showed that rain will not keep them away and also the student section was rowdy all night.
It was a dominant performance for the Bulldogs and a good step with district play coming up this Friday in Baytown against the Baytown Sterling Rangers at 7pm.
