Last Saturday at Dulles HS the La Porte Bulldogs qualified for the state tournament in 7 on 7 for the first time since 2000 and only the second time in school history.
The Bulldogs were paired in a tough group featuring Fort Bend Kempner, La Marque and Fort Bend Bush. La Marque and Bush were lead by highly recruited quarterbacks. La Marque (a 3A team) was unable to advance from group play due to having already qualified for the state tournament in division 2 (3A and below).
In game number one of the day La Porte took on Kempner and wasted no time racking up a 24-9 lead at halftime including some great hook-ups from Junior Quarterback Jordan Jackson to Senior Wide Receiver Jahvey Marks in the back of the end zone, Jackson was on point all day. Unfortunately Marks turned his ankle on the second catch, but would be heard from again later in the tournament. Junior Linebacker Hoza Scott had a good game with two defensive touchdowns on interception returns including the first play of the game for Kempner. The Bulldogs had no problem dispatching Kempner 47-15 and getting off to a great start in the tournament.
In game number two La Porte would face La Marque in what would turn out to be a three and a half hour game with a two and a half hour rain/lightning delay in between halves. La Porte took a 7-6 lead into halftime after a Senior Safety Keith Whitely interception kept La Marque from getting the lead. Then the lightning and rain came with an impromptu lunch break and the game resumed at 1pm. The Bulldogs held on with some great defense in the end with a 13-12 victory. This was La Marque's fourth 7 on 7 tournament to play in and they had only lost one game previously to Klein in overtime.
Due to the weather delay the game against Bush would be shortened to one 25 minute half. The winner would advance to the semifinals and Bush had their eyes on taking down the Bulldogs after their playoff clash last season ended with a La Porte 42-6 victory. It was a very intense game that La Porte pulled out 18-12. It also included the return of Jahvey Marks after turning his ankle against Kempner, he made a gutsy performance with several key catches against Bush and the rest of the day. Also Junior Safety Victor Holmes made an outstanding interception to set up the Bulldogs winning drive. With this victory the Bulldogs were one game away from their goal of qualifying for the state tournament.
After winning their group La Porte would take on the group "C" winner Cinco Ranch in the semi-finals with the winner advancing to the state tournament. The game started with Junior Cornerback Ellis Hutchinson getting two interceptions including returning the first one for a touchdown. This set the tone and the Bulldogs took a 20-0 halftime lead. Junior Receiver Garrison Zabrowski getting two touchdown catches in the second half that capped off a dominating performance and a 34-6 rout. La Porte had six interceptions in the game and clinched their birth in the state tournament in College Station July 20-21.
La Porte would drop the championship game to Fort Bend Dulles who was the host of the tournament 27-20 in a very competitive game, but one that saw both teams running out of gas.

Dulles 7on7 tournament 6/16
La Porte will be playing in the Fort Bend Dulles 7on7 tournament on Saturday June 16th in a State Qualifying Tournament.
The games start at 9am, with pool play ending at 12. If LP advances past pool play they will play in the semifinals at 130 with the finals at 230.
La Porte's group includes Fort Bend Kempner, Fort Bend Bush and La Marque. La Marque cannot advance due to being a 3a school and they have already qualified for the State Tournament in Division 2 (3a and below). It will be a good challenge for the Bulldogs as this is a very athletic group.
Therefore La Porte needs to finish the group stage ahead of Kempner and Bush to make the semifinals. Both teams that make the finals advance to the state tournament.
La Porte was very very close to qualifying last month at the Houston Texans SQT. It was very exciting action and well worth seeing in person. The more fans cheering them on, the better results La Porte will have!

Final Score Orange 31 White 7
The Bulldogs wrapped up spring practice with the annual Orange and White Spring Game Thursday night.
The game started out slow with fumbles on each side, one caused by Hoza Scott for White then one caused by Alex Jones for Orange. What can you say? The big time players make big time plays.
The game settled in and we saw some great runs from the Orange team James Jacobs (80 yard td run) and Keith Whitely with a the help of some great blocking around the corner had a nice 30-40 yard run.
For the White team, they moved the ball well, but couldn't get the ball in the end-zone until all-district RB Jonathan Lewis broke loose for a 65 yard score near the end. Some great running was on display from Marlon Greenidge and Diontre Clark for the White team.
The passing game for Orange was clicking with Jordan Jackson completing a big pass to Taejon Wearen for a 26 yard touchdown. Jackson also completed some good passes with Jahvey Marks and Garrison Zaborowski including a fade route to Marks for a score.
Also on the Orange team big man Clayton Calhoun got a gift on a deflected pass and returned the interception for a touchdown, a lineman's dream.

We head into summer strength and conditioning, summer camps and 7 on 7 tournaments with an idea of what to expect in the upcoming season. Great athletes on both sides of the ball and a season where the Bulldogs goal is to improve on last season with a State Championship.

Final La Porte 43 Baytown Lee 16 Postgame Analysis
It was a much cooler night for football last Friday as the La Porte Bulldogs took down the Baytown Lee Ganders 43-16. La Porte's offense came out firing on all cylinders with an impressive 30 points and over 300 yards of offense in the first half. The offensive line really came out with something to prove this week and controlled the Gander defense. The line was lead by Juniors Tony Briones, Maurice Morris and Justin King.
Junior running back Keith Whitely started the game off with some nice runs and capped off a long drive with an eight yard touchdown. Whitely ran hard all night and ended up with 108 yards on 14 carries with two touchdowns. Baytown Lee responded on the ensuing kickoff with a 100 yard kickoff return touchdown for Gander Senior Wide receiver and Texas A&M committment Jaevon Richardson. From there it was all La Porte with Senior Quarterback Josh Vidales running for a 56 yard touchdown and hooking up with Senior WR Aaron Nance-Garrett for a 39 yard score through the air. On the night Vidales completed 8 of 11 passes for 129 yards and a TD and ran for 59 yards and a TD. Garrett had a breakout game with 5 catches, 92 yards and 1 TD.
The Bulldogs defense shut down the spread attack from Baytown Lee with strong run defense and creating 4 turnovers. Whitely, Nance-Garrett and Junior cornerback Malik Graves recorded the interceptions for La Porte. Sophomore outside linebacker Hoza Scott was in Lee Quarterback Josh Zellars face all night.
In the second half La Porte Sophomore running back Jonathan Lewis took over on the ground and rushed for 111 yards on 11 carries with one touchdown including a dazzling 42 yard run to get the bulldogs to the 3 yard line in the 4th quarter. Sophomore running back Taejon Wearen picked up where he left off last week and ran for 83 yards on 7 carries with some impressive elusiveness around the corner on the jet sweep. Overall a great effort for the offense with 400 yards rushing and 530 yards of total offense.
La Porte's Defense gave up their first touchdown in the 4th quarter after the game was already decided. Strong play from the usual suspects Seniors Chad Sutherland, Cameron Whilley and Chris Hickey at linebacker as well as Juniors Corey Lee and Alex Jones on the defensive line
The real test will come with Klein Forest this Friday in Klein.

Week 1 La Porte vs Baytown Lee Preview
The La Porte Bulldogs (1-0) take on the Baytown Lee Ganders (1-0) this Friday 7pm at Bulldog Stadium in La Porte.
Last week La Porte beat Clements 31-0 while Baytown Lee beat crosstown rival Baytown Sterling 28-20.

The Ganders offense is lead by Junior Quarterback Josh Zellars and superstar Texas A&M commit Senior wide receiver Jaevon Richardson. Last week the Ganders were run-heavy with Zellars (19 carries 101 yards) and Senior running back Keith Johnson (17 carries 96 yards) splitting the load. Zellars was also effective through the air with 128 yards and 2 touchdowns. Expect Zellars to try to find Richardson (5 catches last week) all game to keep the Bulldogs defense off balance.
On defense Lee gave up 265 yards on the ground to Sterling. The key for their win was the six turnovers caused. La Porte should be able to find room to run on the Ganders and will need to hang on to the ball.

Sophomore Quarterback Vic Holmes lead the way on the ground with 64 yards on 11 carries. Expect Junior running back Keith Whitely to have a breakout performance this week after not finding much room to run against Clements. Lookout for Senior wideout Aaron Nance-Garrett and Sophomore Taejon Wearen to get good yards through the air from Holmes and Senior Quarterback Josh Vidales.
On defense La Porte will bring more of the same that we saw against Clements with turnovers and tough coverage. The Bulldogs caused four turnovers with three interceptions last week. Cramps took their toll in the second half allowing Clements to get some yards on the ground. Early weather reports have the high temperature at a nice cool 92 degrees compared to the 128 degrees they measured at Hall Stadium on the turf. Final La Porte 31 Clements 0 Postgame Analysis
For anyone that attended this game, I believe it was one of the hottest games in Houston history. With the astro-turf at Hall Stadium the temperature on the field climbed over 120 degrees at kickoff. The players felt the effects as well with many of them cramping up in the second half.
The heat was the only thing that could slow down La Porte's Darkside defense as they completely dominated the first half. The first play of the game after the opening kickoff La Porte's standout Sophomore OLB Hoza Scott leaped to block Clements' QB Clayton Holgorson's pass and instead caught the ball and walked into the end-zone. Outstanding display of athleticism from Scott, who will be fun to watch this season. It was one of three interceptions on the night for the Bulldogs with Junior CB Ellis Hutchinson and Junior RB/Safety Keith Whitely getting the others. The defense slowed down in the second half when they started cramping up allowing a 60 yard run to Clements RB Lawrenzo Minor. However the Bulldogs preserved the shutout in the fourth quarter on a 4th down goaline stand with Junior nosetackle Corey Lee blowing up the play in the backfield and chasing Minor to the sideline and out of bounds. Standouts on defense included Seniors Chad Sutherland, Cameron Whilley and Aaron Nance-Garrett. Also La Porte had very good coverage from the rotating cast in the secondary including Hutchinson and Junior CB Malik Graves. Also I have to mention Senior LB Chris Hickey as his special teams punt/kickoff coverage was outstanding and he did force a fumble with a big hit.
Side note: Clements' RB Lawrenzo Minor (16 carries 121 yards) was the first running back to gain over 100 yards on the Bulldogs since La Porte played Katy in the 2009 playoffs with Katy RB Will Jeffery gaining 113.
On offense the Bulldogs showed some promise with a lot of young players. Senior QB Josh Vidales and Sophomore QB Vic Holmes rotated throughout the game. With standout Junior Guard Tony Briones out this week the offensive line struggled a little bit with the size and strength of the Rangers defensive line. They fought hard nonetheless. At WR Nance-Garrett got behind the Clements secondary all night. He ended up with one touchdown on a nice throw from Vidales. They will be looking to connect more as the season progresses. Holmes' favorite target was Sophomore Receiver Taejon Wearen who caught 3 passes for 56 yards and looked very elusive in the open field. On the ground the Bulldogs used a multitude of running backs with Junior Keith Whitely showing his great natural running instincts on a few runs. Sophomore Jonathan Lewis also showed great speed and moves. Holmes and Vidales ran hard on their opportunities as well. The Bulldogs have the weapons to make some noise on offense and they will be ready for primetime when the district season rolls around.
La Porte's combination of defense and outstanding kicking game will be something to watch for. Clements continuously started drives inside their own 20 yard line due to the kick offs of Junior Eric Medina. This gives the defense a big advantage as the Bulldogs dominated the field position in the game. Medina also booted a 42 yard field goal with room to spare. Vidales is also a very good punter with good hangtime and this allows players like Hickey time to get down the field and make big plays.
La Porte's first home game is this week against Baytown Lee who are 1-0 after beating fellow 21-5A team Baytown Sterling 28-20.

Week 0 La Porte vs Fort Bend Clements Preview
Football season is back!
La Porte will face off with Fort Bend Clements Rangers at Hall Stadium in Missouri City on Saturday at 7pm. 3335 Hurricane Lane, Missouri City, TX 77459-6353
Last season's opener ended in a 37-7 blowout with La Porte controlling the game from the start. Clements will be looking for revenge this year at their home stadium. Recap from last year:

Clements returns their leading defensive player in Senior middle linebacker Alec Davison. Davison is one of five returning starters on a improved Rangers defensive side of the ball.
On offense the Rangers return only 3 starters and replace all of their skill position players. Clements features a I-formation run-heavy offense. Junior RB Demarcus Cobb is listed as their starting RB and averaged over 5 yards a carry in limited playing time. Expect run on 2/3 of their plays Saturday. They will have a very tough time matching up with the La Porte defense. Their offense struggled in their scrimmage with 4A Richmond Foster.
The "Dark Side" La Porte Bulldog defense returns 6 starters and looked very strong in their scrimmage with Dickinson. Senior MLB Chad Sutherland returns for his 4th varsity season and will be the teams middle linebacker. He is joined in a very strong linebacker group including Seniors Cameron Whilley and Tyron Graves as well as sophomore OLB Hoza Scott. Junior nose tackle Core Lee returns to anchor the defensive line with Senior Safety Aaron Nance-Garrett patrolling the secondary. The Bulldogs will have good depth and rotate Cornerbacks with Junior starting RB Keith Whitely getting some snaps at the other safety position. This should be a very exciting year to watch the Bulldog defense!
On offense La Porte will be very young and feature two Quarterbacks in Senior Josh Vidales and Sophomore Vic Holmes. Vidales features a mix of passing and running while Holmes is more of a running quarterback. At running back returning from last season will be Junior Keith Whitely and Sophomore Hoza Scott along with a plethora of fast sophomore athletes that will spread the defense. Senior WR Aaron Nance-Garrett returns as a very physical receiver that creates major matchup problems for opposing defenses. The offensive line is very young, but has shown very well in the preseason and will be lead by Juniors Maurice Morris and Tony Briones.
How quickly will the offense jell together? They looked good wearing down the Dickinson defense last Friday and broke a bunch of big runs. Luckily the Bulldogs will be able to rely on their defense early in the season and hopefully be ready for the tough district schedule at the end of the season.

La Porte will face off with Fort Bend Clements Rangers at Hall Stadium in Missouri City on Saturday at 7pm. 3335 Hurricane Lane, Missouri City, TX 77459-6353
Last season's opener ended in a 37-7 blowout with La Porte controlling the game from the start. Clements will be looking for revenge this year at their home stadium. Recap from last year:

Clements returns their leading defensive player in Senior middle linebacker Alec Davison. Davison is one of five returning starters on a improved Rangers defensive side of the ball.
On offense the Rangers return only 3 starters and replace all of their skill position players. Clements features a I-formation run-heavy offense. Junior RB Demarcus Cobb is listed as their starting RB and averaged over 5 yards a carry in limited playing time. Expect run on 2/3 of their plays Saturday. They will have a very tough time matching up with the La Porte defense. Their offense struggled in their scrimmage with 4A Richmond Foster.
The "Dark Side" La Porte Bulldog defense returns 6 starters and looked very strong in their scrimmage with Dickinson. Senior MLB Chad Sutherland returns for his 4th varsity season and will be the teams middle linebacker. He is joined in a very strong linebacker group including Seniors Cameron Whilley and Tyron Graves as well as sophomore OLB Hoza Scott.
