The La Porte Bulldogs rebounded after a tough loss against their rivals to defeat the Channelview Falcons 35-14 last Friday night at Bulldog Stadium.
The game did not start as planned after a slow first quarter the Falcons lead 7-0. Channelview took the opening kickoff and used a 19 play 60 yard drive to get on the board first with a two yard touchdown run from Junior Running Back Chris Jefferson. The drive took almost six minutes off the clock.
The second quarter was all Bulldogs. La Porte had the ball at their own 20 on 3rd down and 11 yards to go. Senior Quarterback Jordan Jackson would find Junior Tight End Jaron Dykstra wide open in the seam for a 41 yard catch into Falcon territory. The next play Junior Running Back Britt Grant burst through a big hole on the left side of the Bulldog line for a 35 yard run to the five yard line. Grant would then finish off the drive with a tough five yard run carrying three defenders across the goaline. The score was knotted up 7-7 with 8:55 left in the second quarter.
Good La Porte defensive tackling would force Channelview to punt and the Bulldogs took over at the Falcons 48 yard line. Good running from Senior Running Back Johnathan Lewis would get the Bulldogs deep into Channelview territory. Senior Fullback Trevor Nelson who also had a catch on the drive would walk in from six yards out to give La Porte the lead 14-7 with 3:37 left in the half.
The Bulldog defense held strong and forced Channelview to punt. Freshman Linebacker Terrell Bernard came unblocked off the left side to block the attempted punt and give La Porte great field position at the Channelview 18 yard line. Jackson would then find Nelson in the flat who cut up field and tip toed the sidelines down to the one yard line. On first and goal Jackson would lunge across the goaline on the quarterback keeper to make the score 21-7 with 2:29 left in the half.
La Porte Senior Linebacker Jesse Hickman would recover the ensuing kickoff, but the Bulldogs could not add anything before the end of the half. Senior Safety Victor Holmes would also pick up a interception for the Bulldogs.
Channelview started the second half with a onside kick in which they recovered. Five plays later the Falcons were in the end zone on a nine yard pass from Sophomore Quarterback Jalen Hurts to Senior Receiver Jaime Calddell. La Porte lead 21-14 with 10:30 left in the third quarter.
Britt Grant would take over later in the third quarter, on one drive carrying five times for 75 yards including a 41 yard touchdown run through the left side of the line. Grant would end the game with 205 yards rushing and two scores. La Porte lead 28-14 with 53 seconds left in the third quarter.
The fourth quarter featured all La Porte running. The Bulldogs would march on a 11 play 89 yard drive with all runs. Johnathan Lewis would score on 23 yard pitch around the left side. Lewis ended up with 100 yards and a touchdown for the game. The Bulldog offensive line dominated in the second half. Final score La Porte 35 Channelview 7.
Next up is the big clash with North Shore. North Shore (8-0) is ranked fourth in the state and La Porte (5-3) has pulled out a victory over them the last two seasons. If La Porte can win this week they will be in the driver seat for a third straight district championship. The game will be played Friday night at GPISD Stadium at 7pm.
