La Porte, Running Game Down Channelview 35-14

The La Porte Bulldogs rebounded after a tough loss against their rivals to defeat the Channelview Falcons 35-14 last Friday night at Bulldog Stadium.

The game did not start as planned after a slow first quarter the Falcons lead 7-0.  Channelview took the opening kickoff and used a 19 play 60 yard drive to get on the board first with a two yard touchdown run from Junior Running Back Chris Jefferson.  The drive took almost six minutes off the clock.

The second quarter was all Bulldogs.  La Porte had the ball at their own 20 on 3rd down and 11 yards to go.  Senior Quarterback Jordan Jackson would find Junior Tight End Jaron Dykstra wide open in the seam for a 41 yard catch into Falcon territory.  The next play Junior Running Back Britt Grant burst through a big hole on the left side of the Bulldog line for a 35 yard run to the five yard line.  Grant would then finish off the drive with a tough five yard run carrying three defenders across the goaline.  The score was knotted up 7-7 with 8:55 left in the second quarter.

Good La Porte defensive tackling would force Channelview to punt and the Bulldogs took over at the Falcons 48 yard line.  Good running from Senior Running Back Johnathan Lewis would get the Bulldogs deep into Channelview territory.  Senior Fullback Trevor Nelson who also had a catch on the drive would walk in from six yards out to give La Porte the lead 14-7 with 3:37 left in the half.

The Bulldog defense held strong and forced Channelview to punt.  Freshman Linebacker Terrell Bernard came unblocked off the left side to block the attempted punt and give La Porte great field position at the Channelview 18 yard line. Jackson would then find Nelson in the flat who cut up field and tip toed the sidelines down to the one yard line.  On first and goal Jackson would lunge across the goaline on the quarterback keeper to make the score 21-7 with 2:29 left in the half.

La Porte Senior Linebacker Jesse Hickman would recover the ensuing kickoff, but the Bulldogs could not add anything before the end of the half.  Senior Safety Victor Holmes would also pick up a interception for the Bulldogs.

Channelview started the second half with a onside kick in which they recovered.  Five plays later the Falcons were in the end zone on a nine yard pass from Sophomore Quarterback Jalen Hurts to Senior Receiver Jaime Calddell.  La Porte lead 21-14 with 10:30 left in the third quarter.

Britt Grant would take over later in the third quarter, on one drive carrying five times for 75 yards including a 41 yard touchdown run through the left side of the line.  Grant would end the game with 205 yards rushing and two scores.  La Porte lead 28-14 with 53 seconds left in the third quarter.

The fourth quarter featured all La Porte running.  The Bulldogs would march on a 11 play 89 yard drive with all runs.  Johnathan Lewis would score on 23 yard pitch around the left side.  Lewis ended up with 100 yards and a touchdown for the game.  The Bulldog offensive line dominated in the second half. Final score La Porte 35 Channelview 7.

Next up is the big clash with North Shore.  North Shore (8-0) is ranked fourth in the state and La Porte (5-3) has pulled out a victory over them the last two seasons.  If La Porte can win this week they will be in the driver seat for a third straight district championship.  The game will be played Friday night at GPISD Stadium at 7pm.

Deer Park Gets Big Victory Over La Porte

The La Porte Bulldogs traveled to face the Deer Park Deer last Friday in the annual rivalry game between the two teams.  It was not a pretty contest and took an overtime period to complete with the Deer coming out on top 14-7.  This game was a struggle all night.

The first quarter featured lots of defense.  Deer Park's first drive of the game would end around midfield where La Porte Senior Linebacker Hoza Scott stripped the quarterback and recovered.  La Porte would quickly move inside the Deer 20 yard line, but the drive would stall there and the field goal would not be successful.  The quarter would finish in a 0-0 deadlock.

The second quarter Deer Park began to move the ball.  The Deer marched 56 yards on 14 plays, 12 of them runs with Deer Running Back Trey Farmer finishing it off on 3rd down and a three yard touchdown run.  Farmer was largely held in check on the night with 20 carries for 70 yards (3.5 per carry).

After the kickoff La Porte would come out slinging.  Senior Quarterback Jordan Jackson found Junior Wide Receiver David Terrebonne down the seam for a 28 yard gain.  After three straight runs La Porte faced 4th and 2 from the Deer Park 25 yard line.  Hoza Scott would make his presence felt on offense as he would sprint to the right passed the first down and keep going all the way to the end zone with a few jukes and good blocks down field.  La Porte tied the game 7-7 going into halftime.

The second half saw no scoring and both defenses coming up with key stops.  The Bulldogs seemed to move the ball better in the half, but could not capitalize on their chances.

La Porte Senior Victor Holmes came up big on the first play of the 4th quarter blocking a Deer Park field goal attempt.  It would begin a quarter of La Porte missed chances.  Bulldog Senior Running Back Johnathan Lewis would get a couple nice gains inside the Deer 30 yard line.  The drive would stall and the Bulldogs turned it over on downs.  The next La Porte drive would end in a interception. All the while the La Porte defense held tough.

La Porte had one more chance in regulation.  Junior Running Back Britt Grant ran the ball 30 yards on the first play of the drive.  Jackson would find Grant once again on a 24 yard catch and run out of the backfield down to the Deer Park 16 yard line where Jackson would spike it to kill the clock. With 12 seconds left La Porte would line up for a 32 yard field goal in which Deer Park would use a timeout just before the snap.  The next attempt would be blocked by the charging Deer players and Terrebonne would have to come up with a game saving tackle via facemask.  On to overtime we went with the teams tied 7-7.

La Porte won the coin toss and elected to play defense first.  Deer Park Senior Quarterback Connor Means would waste little time on a zone read play powering his way into the end zone from 25 yards out.  Deer Park lead 14-7, but La Porte would have one more chance.

After being stuffed on a first down run, Jackson dropped back on 2nd and 10 and found Senior Wide Receiver Taejon Wearen over the middle who made a stretched out finger tip catch for a Bulldog first down.  A false start would back the Bulldogs up five yards, followed by a screen pass from Jackson to Grant for four yards.  On second down La Porte would nearly get intercepted, but lived to fight on.  A third down pass fell incomplete.  On fourth down Jackson dropped back and threw a fade to the back of the end zone intended for Scott which fell incomplete with some heavy contact on the play.  However that was the ball game and Deer Park won the annual contest 14-7.

Deer Park (3-4-1) came to play in a must win game to save their playoff hopes for now.  La Porte (4-3) must win against Channelview this week to keep the playoffs within sight and the Bulldogs will be back at home at 7pm Friday night.

Final La Porte 34 Beaumont Westbrook 7

The La Porte Bulldogs remained undefeated in district play and one step closer to a playoff spot with a 34-7 dominating victory over the Beaumont West Brook Bruins last Friday. West Brook came into the game with a 3-1 record and their only loss to state-ranked Houston Lamar in a close game.

However, this night was all about the Bulldogs as it was Homecoming.  Zipporah Jno-Finn was honored with being the Queen while Renzo Jimenez was named king.

Onto the football action as La Porte started fast and furious.  Junior Receiver David Terrebonne took the opening kickoff inside the West Brook 40 yard line.  Four plays later Senior Victor Holmes took the sweep around the left side untouched for a 24 yard touchdown run.  It was 7-0 Bulldogs with 10:35 left in the 1st quarter.

Beaumont West Brook's standout Senior Running Back Justin Hervey picked up an injury on the teams first drive and only played a couple plays in the second half, hampering the Bruins offense.

Later in the first quarter La Porte would go on a 10-play 72 yard march down the field.  Senior Hoza Scott would cap off the drive with a untouched 15 yard run around the right side.  It seemed like he almost walked in the end zone on the play.  La Porte lead 13-0 with 32 seconds left in the 1st quarter.

West Brook would get on the board on their next possession as Junior Quarterback Isaac Aubrey found Sophomore receiver Keith Corbin for a 49 yard touchdown pass on a slant route. La Porte lead 13-7 with 10:48 left in the second quarter.

The Bruins were gaining momentum and came up with a stop on defense.  They began moving the ball again on offense when Senior Linebacker Jesse Hickman layed a big hit on the quarterback popping the ball loose and Senior Defensive End Lane Albertson was there to scoop the ball up and return it 56 yards for a touchdown.  La Porte lead 20-7 going into the halftime festivities.

La Porte's defense would clamp down on the Bruins in the second half and put the game away on the back of a Senior Fullback Trevor Nelson one yard run and a Junior Running Back Britt Grant six yard run. The final was a 34-7 La Porte victory.

That young Bulldog offensive line had two starters out, but still performed exceptionally paving the way for 245 rushing yards and 4 tds on the ground.  Grant lead the running backs with 131 yards on 9 carries.

This week La Porte has a bye and we are getting set for the big matchup with Deer Park on October 18th.  A win in that game will virtually guarantee the Bulldogs a playoff spot.

Game 5 La Porte 31 Baytown Sterling 10

Last Friday night the La Porte Bulldogs traveled to Baytown to take on the Sterling Rangers in the first district match-up of 2013.  It would also be La Porte's first road victory of the season as the Bulldogs pulled it out in the second half with a 31-10 victory.

The game was a lot closer than the score showed as it was tied 3-3 going into halftime.  The only highlights of the first half were La Porte Freshman Linebacker Terrell Bernard's second interception of the season and Junior La Porte Kicker Caesar Silva continued his exceptional beginning of the season with a 25 yard field goal.  It was ugly for both teams, but the Bulldog defense held up strong.

The second half began with La Porte looking for a spark.  They got just that.  Senior Quarterback Jordan Jackson hit Senior Fullback Trevor Nelson on a fingertip catch for 19 yards into Sterling territory. Junior Running Back Britt Grant picked up 7 yards around the left side on first down, followed by an incomplete pass on second down.  On 3rd down Senior Running Back / Linebacker Hoza Scott saw his first snap on the field of the season carrying five defenders for a one yard gain.  On 4th and 2 Scott took the handoff off tackle and sprinted 26 yards for a touchdown.  La Porte lead 10-3 with 9:17 left in the 3rd quarter.

La Porte would fumble while crossing the goaline after running straight at the Rangers on their next drive.  Sterling recovered in the end zone.  Sterling, starting at their own 20, would have three straight incomplete passes under heavy pressure from the Bulldog's defensive line.  Sterling's punt would be downed at their own 45 and give the Bulldogs great field position.

The Bulldog offensive line was missing their standout Senior Offensive Tackle Michael Leagan on this night, but the young line with 2 Juniors (Clayton Calhoun and Tyler Boudreaux) and 3 Sophomores (Logan Jackson, Luis Atilano and Tristan Lozano) stepped up big in the second half.  After the punt, Hoza Scott would come up big behind that line again with 45 yards over three straight carries including a 29 yard touchdown run to put La Porte up 17-3 at the end of the 3rd quarter.

Sterling would fumble the ensuing kickoff, but get recover at their own 14 yard line.  La Porte forced them into another three and out.  Scott would take the next play for 33 yards deep into Baytown territory.  Senior Running Back Johnathan Lewis would cap it off with a 11 yard touchdown run and a 24-3 lead.

Baytown Sterling got on the board with 6:59 left on a 11 yard pass, however La Porte would answer back immediately with the run game taking over and Britt Grant scoring the final touchdown of the game with a 9 yard game and a 31-10 final score.

The Bulldogs used the ground game to run over the Rangers in the second half.

La Porte (3-2) moves on to a tough match-up with Beaumont West Brook (4-1) this week at Bulldog Stadium.  It is also homecoming for La Porte, so expect a rowdy crowd.  This will be a very important game in district 21-5A playoff seeding.
