Final La Porte 34 Deer Park 31 Postgame Analysis

The big game had no shortage of excitement last Friday with La Porte pulling out the win 34-31 over Deer Park at Bulldog Stadium.  The game featured three 14 point leads for the Bulldogs and the Deer came back each time and ultimately forced overtime.

Overtime started with Deer Park driving inside the La Porte 10 yard line and the Bulldogs held and forced a Deer field goal to make the score 31-28 Deer Park.  La Porte took over and Senior Quarterback Josh Vidales threw a backwards pass to Sophomore Receiver Taejon Wearen who reversed to the other side of the field and stepped out of bounds at the Deer 5 yard line for a 20 yard gain.  On the ensuing play Junior Running Back and star of the game Keith Whitely ran to the right and pushed a blocker out of the way, diving in for a 5 yard touchdown and La Porte victory.

The game started with Deer Park deferring to the second half and La Porte received.  Sophomore Vic Holmes had a great return and La Porte started out near midfield.  The Bulldogs proceeded to march down the field with the run and a wildcat package with Whitely taking charge.  Senior Chad Sutherland punched in a one yard touchdown run to open up the scoring.

Two possessions later Deer Park took over at the 50 yard line and Senior Running Back Demetrius Banks took the hand off to the left side; La Porte's Senior Defensive End Tyrone Graves knocked the ball loose and Junior Cornerback Malik Graves picked up the fumble and returned it 40 yards for the touchdown.  La Porte lead 14-0.

Just before halftime Deer Park took over near midfield and drove down the field with passing from Senior Quarterback Austin Rainer.  On fourth and goal Rainer scored on the quarterback sneak to make the score La Porte 14 Deer Park 7.

Deer Park started the second half at their own 20 with Banks taking the snap to the left and Chad Sutherland knocking the ball out. Senior Defensive End Blake Turlington recovered at the Deer 10.  A couple plays later Whitely took it in for the score and made it 21-7 Bulldogs with 11:07 left in the 3rd Quarter.

After trading quick possessions Deer Park took over at their own 23 and Rainer had two big passes down to the La Porte one yard line. Deer Park Senior Running Back Justin James carried the ball into the end zone making the score 21-14 La Porte.

In the 4th quarter Deer Park had the ball at their own 46 and La Porte Senior Linebacker Cameron Whilley intercepted and returned the ball to midfield with a Deer Park personal foul moving the ball inside Deer Park territory to the 36.  La Porte responded with a flea flicker and Vidales throwing to Senior Receiver Aaron Nance-Garrett for a 36 yard touchdown.  Deer Park had been putting 10 players at the line of scrimmage and La Porte made them pay for their aggressiveness.  The Bulldogs lead 28-14 with 5:46 left.

Deer Park wasted no time driving down the field and Senior Fullback Clay De La Garza took a pass in for a long touchdown making the score La Porte 28 Deer Park 21.

La Porte was forced to punt and Deer Park took over at their own 20.  Rainer drove the Deer down the field and completed a 11 yard touchdown tying the game at 28.

The nail biter ended in overtime with La Porte victory.

Deer Park made some good adjustments at halftime moving to quicker passes to keep the La Porte pressure off of them.  La Porte's defense carried them causing three turnovers leading to 21 La Porte points despite Rainer throwing for 340 yards and two scores.  Deer Park Senior Receiver Eric Luna torched the Bulldogs for 132 yards on 6 catches in a losing effort.

Keith Whitely willed the Bulldogs to victory with 103 yards and 2 scores.  La Porte showed great discipline in staying away from the big personal foul penalties that have plagued them this season.  Deer Park out-gained La Porte 408-201 in total yards, but the turnovers were the key to La Porte victory on this night.  Deer Park moves to 4-1 on the season.

It was a complete team effort for the Bulldogs.  The offensive line fought hard against the bigger Deer Park players and La Porte took advantage of field position and turnovers.

La Porte (4-1) takes on Channelview (4-1) and their awesome no huddle spread passing attack at Bulldog Stadium in two weeks after a bye week this week.

Final La Porte 34 Deer Park 31 #txhsfb

La Porte pulled off the 34-31 win in overtime after having the game in control into the 4th quarter and blowing a 2 touchdown lead.

Games between La Porte and Deer Park are never over.

Deer Park decided to try to run the ball in OT after passing at will throughout the second half.  This was their major mistake.  They settled for a FG.

Junior Running Back Keith Whitely carried the Bulldogs on his back tonight and willed himself into the end zone in overtime for the game winner.

Deer Park picked La Porte apart with their passing game in the second half.  The Bulldogs pressure could not get to Deer Senior QB Austin Rainer and he had a great game.  There will be plenty for LP to work on before facing a prolific passing team Channelview in 2 weeks.

I will have a game recap tomorrow and I will have a district preview this week.

Gameday La Porte vs Deer Park #txhsfb

What an exciting, nerve racking day!

As of yesterday afternoon the reserved seating was sold out on the La Porte side and the General admission tickets may be gone before they can sell any at the gates.  I would get your tickets today during the day or get there really early tonight if you don't have them.

So far what I've heard is we will have channel 2 "Friday Football Frenzy" in the house.

Also I'm hearing channel 13, channel 57 will also be attending.  Check out the news after the game!  Lets get really loud and show them what this rivalry is all about.

1560 the Game AM radio will be there.  If you can't make it stream on line at 1560thegame.com or tune in the old fashioned radio way.

The Houston Chronicle will also be in the house and we are their game of the week!  Here is the link to the story:   http://www.chron.com/sports/highschool/article/Heated-La-Porte-Deer-Park-rivalry-returns-2184705.php

I don't see any previews from Deer Park's prospective out there.  They need a blog too!  Any of you Deer Park folks reading, if you're passionate about football and have some spare time you may want to try and get something going like this.  I will give you my thoughts just email me lpbulldogblog@yahoo.com.  That goes for anyone interested in starting something like this for their school.  It increases exposure and is very valuable for those looking for more information.

La Porte has some nagging injuries and hopefully everyone will be healthy for tonight!

Week 4 La Porte vs Deer Park Preview

The big game is upon us as Friday night at Bulldog Stadium the La Porte Bulldogs take on the Deer Park Deer in the yearly rivalry game.  The Bulldogs are looking to avenge last season's 21-19 loss in Deer Park.

La Porte comes into this weeks game 3-1 after a big win over Atascocita last week 26-7.  La Porte's defense held Atascocita to 80 total yards and 2 first downs over the whole game.

Deer Park comes to La Porte with a 4-0 record.  Last week the Deer beat Westside 27-25 despite giving up 327 yards rushing to standout Westside running back Ben Catalon.  Deer Park is ranked #10 in the Houston area by the Chronicle.

On offense Deer Park has been lighting up the scoreboards averaging over 29 points per game.  Senior Quarterback and 3 year starter Austin Rainer leads the pro style Deer attack. Rainer has had some success through the air with 726 yards and 7 touchdowns.  His favorite receiver is Junior Eric Luna (15 catches 342 yards 5 touchdowns).  On the ground Senior Running Back Demetrius Banks has been a dominant force with 705 yards and 6 tds including a couple of 200 yard performances.

On defense Deer Park is lead by Linebackers Casey Westmoreland (Sr) and Vincent Vega (Jr).  The Deer defense has been vulnerable and have given up almost 22 points a game.  La Porte should be able to get some points on the board this week.

On offense La Porte features a lot of different backs and offensive sets.  Junior Keith Whitely leads the Bulldogs in rushing with 258 yards and 4 touchdowns.  He is followed closely by Sophomore Jonathan Lewis (202 yards, 6.3 yards per carry).  Senior Quarterback Josh Vidales (311 pass yards, 119 rushing) provides a leader in the backfield of a very young Bulldog offense.  At receiver Senior Aaron Nance-Garrett (9 catches, 128 yards) is looking for a breakout performance this week. Junior Kicker Eric Medina has been outstanding this season with some long field goals.

On defense the Bulldogs feature the great linebacker play La Porte is becoming famous for with Seniors Cameron Whilley, Chad Sutherland and Chris Hickey as well as electric Sophomore Hoza Scott.  La Porte will be in the backfield all night forcing mistakes and negative plays for the offense.  Nance-Garrett leads the secondary along with Whitely and Juniors Ellis Hutchinson and Malik Graves.  On the defensive line the Bulldogs have featured the outstanding trio of Senior Blake Turlington and Juniors Corey Lee and Alex Jones.  Corey Lee was out last week and we will see if he is back in the lineup Friday night.

Keys to a La Porte Victory:
- Make Rainer try to move the Deer through the air.  Controlling the ground game will give the Bulldogs control of time of possession and will wear down the Deer defense in the 4th quarter.
-Win the battle of field position.  La Porte's young offense has struggled with mistakes and a shorter field can help get the Bulldogs into field goal range.  Medina and Vidales have been outstanding this season in kicking and punting.
-La Porte must find an identity on offense this week after struggling the last two weeks.

The game this week will be on 1560 the game AM radio locally this week as well as online at 1560thegame.com.  I expect we will have a capacity crowd at Bulldog stadium and the stadium will be full early.

Lets get loud and support the La Porte Bulldogs!

Final La Porte 26 Atascocita 7 Postgame Analysis

It was an ugly game at Turner Stadium last Friday, but the La Porte Bulldogs found a way to pull out a 26-7 win over the Atascocita Eagles. Thank you to Lance Johnson for attending and giving out updates!  Follow him on twitter @LPdogLJhookem.

The game started with a good drive from La Porte and Junior Running Back Keith Whitely (16 carries, 91 yards) capped it off with a 21 yard touchdown run early in the first quarter.  After a few back and forth possessions La Porte was intercepted by in their own territory and Atascocita mad them pay with a 35 yard touchdown pass from Grant Ashcraft to Jemarcus Jones.  The rest of the half featured two Junior Kicker Eric Medina field goals, a 42 and a 34 yarder.  At halftime the score was La Porte 13 Atascocita 7.

The second half came and went with the La Porte Defense completely shutting down the Atascocita offense.  On the night the Eagles only had 2 first downs and 80 total yards.  La Porte's offense was having a hard time getting much going as well, but finally broke through in the 4th quarter with Senior Quarterback Josh Vidales taking the ball himself for a 23 yard touchdown with ten minutes left.  The Bulldogs finally seemed to wear down Atascocita's defense and a good drive was capped off with a 1 yard Chad Sutherland touchdown.

La Porte's defense came into the game without standout Junior Nosetackle Corey Lee.  The defensive ends Senior Blake Turlington and Junior Alex Jones stepped up in his absence and the Bulldogs D did not miss a beat.   Atascocita abandoned their running game in the second half and La Porte put so much pressure on the Eagles offense they could not get anything going.

Atascocita had more penalties yards marked off then they had on offense 102 yards in penalites and only 80 of offense.  La Porte needs to work on stopping all of these penalties as well as they had 11 penalties for 120 yards marked off.  Make these mistakes against teams like Deer Park and they will make you pay.

Speaking of, it's DEER PARK WEEK!

Week 3 La Porte at Atascocita Preview

The La Porte Bulldogs travel north again this Friday at 7pm to face the Atascocita Eagles at Turner Stadium 1700 Wilson Rd, Humble, TX 77338.

Both teams enter the game with 2-1 records and both teams had their first loss last week.  La Porte fell to Klein Forest 19-10 while Atascocita fell to Hightower 31-14.  Both teams stepped up in competition last week compared to the first two weeks.

Last season the Bulldogs blew out the Eagles 35-0 in a game that was over by halftime. Atascocita only managed 23 total yards and 4 first downs for the entire game.  The Eagles will be looking to avenge that loss with home field advatage this season. Highlights: http://lpbulldogs.blogspot.com/2010/09/la-porte-vs-atascocita-highlight-video.html

On offense Atascocita is lead by Junior running back Elijah Merchant (30 carries 264 yards).  He is a small back that is very quick.  At quarterback the Eagles have used a couple with Sophomore Greg Campbell more of a running threat and Junior Grant Ashcroft more of a passing threat.  Against Hightower last week they could not get anything going on the ground.  I expect they will need to pass to get anywhere against the Bulldogs D.

The Atascocita defense has been better against the run than against the pass.  They are led by Senior Safety Brandon Gamble (6-2, 205).  La Porte will be trying to get their ground game back on track.

La Porte's offense has featured many ball carriers.  Sophomore Jonathan Lewis (174 yards on 21 carries) leads the Bulldogs in rushing with Junior Keith Whitely (167 yards on 42 carries) right behind him.  Senior Aaron Nance-Garrett (8 catches 118 yards) leads all receivers. Senior Quarterback Josh Vidales (225 passing yards, 2 TD's) features a mix of passing and running while Sophomore QB Vic Holmes (117 yards on 20 carries) is more of a running QB.

La Porte on defense has been very impressive and they are gaining notoriety around the area and state after their performance last week albeit a losing effort.  This week they wont have a dynamic player to stop, but they will have to worry about 2-3 dangerous players. I believe they will come out with a chip on their shoulder to shut down the Eagles.

Keys to The Game
- Get the offense going.  Deer Park is next week and they will have a tough defense.  Exchanges between QB/RB need to be on the same page this week.
- Complete some passes downfield to open up the running game.
- Really this is the last pre-season game and a time to work on different things.  Deer Park week is just as important as a district game.  We could see experiments on the offensive side of the ball to see what works.

Once again the game will be broadcast online at  http://www.legacysportsnetwork.com/

Final Klein Forest 19 La Porte 10 Postgame Analysis

The much hyped match-up of La Porte's Defense against Klein Forest and Senior Texas A&M recruit Quarterback Matt Davis lived up to expectations in a hard hitting battle.  Klein Forest pulled out the victory 19-10 avenging last season's loss in La Porte.

In the first quarter the Bulldogs jumped out fast, moving the ball into the Golden Eagles territory.  After stalling out Junior Kicker Eric Medina hit a 46 yard field goal to put La Porte up 3-0.  Klein Forest would answer as Matt Davis scrambled around like a video game quarterback with the Bulldogs all over him and found a wide open receiver for a 75 yard touchdown on a broken coverage.

In the second quarter La Porte would answer with a great 21 yard run by Sophomore running back Jonathan Lewis moving the Bulldogs inside the ten yard line.  Sophomore Hoza Scott would finish off the drive with a 8 yard touchdown run around the left side and put La Porte up 10-6.  The defenses battled back and forth until the clock was running down in the half.  Klein Forest managed to get deep into La Porte territory on a few scrambles and some penalties with 5 seconds left in the half.  Davis dropped back, ran around for a while and threw the ball into the end zone where it bounced off the pads of his receiver and landed in the hands of another Golden Eagle in the back off the end zone.  The 10 yard touchdown would take the teams to the locker room with Klein Forest leading 12-10.

The second half was a defensive struggle as neither team could get any offense going at all.  La Porte completely shut down the Golden Eagle offense until the 4th quarter.  La Porte decided to go with the wishbone offense at the end of the 3rd and start of the 4th and moved the ball down field with great efficiency and purpose.  However Klein Forest came up with two big stops on 2nd and 3rd down with La Porte at the Klein Forest 35 yard line.  On 4th and short the referees called the Bulldogs for offsides and La Porte decided to punt.  Josh Vidales was set for the punt, but the snap skied over him and deep into La Porte territory where Vidales fell on the ball at the La Porte 25.  The deflated Bulldogs gave up a quick running touchdown to Davis and Klein Forest went up 19-10 where the score would stay.

The Bulldog defense put up a great performance holding Davis to 3.3 yards per carry and only 38% of his passes were completed.  They bottled him up in the backfield all night and had four sacks. Great defensive performance from Corey Lee, Chad Sutherland, Hoza Scott, Cameron Whilley, Aaron Nance-Garrett and Malik Graves to name a few that stood out.

Klein Forest won this game by committing no turnovers and playing stingy defense.  The Golden Eagle defense had a big size advantage on the La Porte offense and played a very physical game.  There were many big hits from both sides.  La Porte's youth on the offensive side of the ball showed with mix ups on hand offs and overall confusion sometimes.  The Bulldogs will hit the film room and get the kinks out with two more games to go until district play begins.

This week another long drive to Turner Stadium to play Atascocita.

Week 2 La Porte At Klein Forest Preview

This week the La Porte Bulldogs (2-0) will visit the Klein Forest Golden Eagles (2-0) 7pm Friday in a highly anticipated matchup of teams that have had very good early season results. Last season La Porte beat Klein Forest 26-13. http://lpbulldogs.blogspot.com/2010/09/final-la-porte-26-klein-forest-13.html
Highlights: http://lpbulldogs.blogspot.com/2010/09/la-porte-vs-klein-forest-highlight.html

La Porte breezes into this weeks game with victories over Fort Bend Clements (31-0) and Baytown Lee (43-16).

Klein Forest enters the game after victories over highly ranked Cinco Ranch (32-17) and Fort Bend Marshall (28-7).

On offense Klein Forest features Senior Quarterback and Texas A&M prize recruit Matt Davis.  Rivals rates Davis as the #3 QB recruit in the country.  He will pose problems through the air and on the ground.  Coming into the third game of the season he has amassed 280 yards and 2 touchdowns through the air and 300 yards and 3 touchdowns on the ground. The Eagles run a lot of zone-read with Kenneth Jones their running back and Davis. At receiver Klein Forest spreads the ball to many with Senior Markel Steward-Gillespie the most hyped coming into the season.

On defense Klein Forest is big, physical and very tough against the run allowing under 4 yards per carry so far this season. Junior Linebacker Tyree Gray is a 6'3" 240 lbs run stopper, he had a impact on last season's game and really stands out especially with his size.

La Porte comes into this week after putting up over 500 yards of offense on Baytown Lee.  Senior Quarterback Josh Vidales was clicking with Senior Wide Receiver Aaron Nance-Garret through the air and Junior Running Back Keith Whitely the collection of Sophomore Running Backs on the ground.  The Bulldogs will need to continue the mix of run and pass to keep the Golden Eagles off balance and open up the running game in the second half.  The offensive line had a great game last week and will have a much bigger test this week against Klein Forest.

On defense La Porte gets a high profile matchup against a hyped quarterback to make a name for themselves.  The fans in La Porte know what this defense is capable of, but the Houston media and state media will have their eyes on this game to see what they are all about.  Seniors Chad Sutherland, Chris Hickey will man the inside linebackers to shut down the inside running game.  Senior Cameron Whilley and Sophomore Hoza Scott will be in charge on the outside to slow down the off tackle zone read play Klein Forest loves to run.  The secondary will have to be on their toes this week as Davis will put the ball in the air with short and deep throws. Whitely lead the Bulldogs with 2 interceptions.

Keys to the Game for La Porte:
-Force Davis to beat you through the air where he can make mistakes.  La Porte has 8 turnovers created through two games including six interceptions. Davis has two interceptions thrown.
-La Porte must show better tackling technique and wrap up their man after initial contact.  I know the big hits are fun to get and watch, but Klein Forest will make you pay for missed tackles.
-Field position is a part of the game La Porte excels at with Vidales punting and Junior Kicker Eric Medina being a big advantage so far this season.  Win the battle and create shorter fields for the offense.

The game this week will be broadcast locally on 1560AM http://1560thegame.com and http://www.legacysportsnetwork.com/.  The Houston Chronicle should also be present this week.

Come on out to Klein and support the Bulldogs!

Final La Porte 43 Baytown Lee 16 Postgame Analysis

It was a much cooler night for football last Friday as the La Porte Bulldogs took down the Baytown Lee Ganders 43-16. La Porte's offense came out firing on all cylinders with an impressive 30 points and over 300 yards of offense in the first half.  The offensive line really came out with something to prove this week and controlled the Gander defense.  The line was lead by Juniors Tony Briones, Maurice Morris and Justin King.

Junior running back Keith Whitely started the game off with some nice runs and capped off a long drive with an eight yard touchdown.  Whitely ran hard all night and ended up with 108 yards on 14 carries with two touchdowns.  Baytown Lee responded on the ensuing kickoff with a 100 yard kickoff return touchdown for Gander Senior Wide receiver and Texas A&M committment Jaevon Richardson.  From there it was all La Porte with Senior Quarterback Josh Vidales running for a 56 yard touchdown and hooking up with Senior WR Aaron Nance-Garrett for a 39 yard score through the air.  On the night Vidales completed 8 of 11 passes for 129 yards and a TD and ran for 59 yards and a TD.  Garrett had a breakout game with 5 catches, 92 yards and 1 TD.

The Bulldogs defense shut down the spread attack from Baytown Lee with strong run defense and creating 4 turnovers. Whitely, Nance-Garrett and Junior cornerback Malik Graves recorded the interceptions for La Porte.  Sophomore outside linebacker Hoza Scott was in Lee Quarterback Josh Zellars face all night.

In the second half La Porte Sophomore running back Jonathan Lewis took over on the ground and rushed for 111 yards on 11 carries with one touchdown including a dazzling 42 yard run to get the bulldogs to the 3 yard line in the 4th quarter.  Sophomore running back Taejon Wearen picked up where he left off last week and ran for 83 yards on 7 carries with some impressive elusiveness around the corner on the jet sweep. Overall a great effort for the offense with 400 yards rushing and 530 yards of total offense.

La Porte's Defense gave up their first touchdown in the 4th quarter after the game was already decided.  Strong play from the usual suspects Seniors Chad Sutherland, Cameron Whilley and Chris Hickey at linebacker as well as Juniors Corey Lee and Alex Jones on the defensive line

The real test will come with Klein Forest this Friday in Klein.
