7pm This Friday at Baytown's Stallworth Stadium will be game 2 of the 2010 campaign as La Porte (1-0) takes on Baytown Lee (0-1). La Porte comes off a 37-7 dismantling of Fort Bend Clements. Baytown Lee lost in overtime to cross town rival and district 21-5a's Baytown Sterling. Here is a recap of Lee's loss from the Ganders blog: http://leeganderfootball.blogspot.com/.
La Porte will be trying to get revenge for last years season opening 27-14 loss to the Ganders. It saw QB Malcolm Ruben and WR Jaevon Richardson torch the Bulldogs young defense for 2 long TD's through the air. Both are returning this season.
Lee has struggled for a few years and is trying to get their program back on the right track. On offense Lee features a spread passing attack with 4 wide receiver sets. The Ganders use quick passes to set up their running game and spread the defense to rely on one on one match-ups. Senior QB Malcolm Ruben leads the offense and has a year of experience under his belt after throwing for 1342 yds and 14 tds. He will be trying to limit his interceptions after throwing 15 last year and 2 in the opening loss to Sterling. Junior wide receiver Jaevon Richardson also returns as Lee's leading receiver. Last year Richardson caught 37 passes for 690 yds averaging almost 19 yards per reception. He is definitely one to watch on Friday. The tall and quick La Porte cornerbacks will have quite a job containing him. The Ganders had a couple of injuries to other receivers last week and may have to go further down the depth chart for help. Lee's second leading rusher from 2009 Keith Johnson returns and had a big week against Sterling rushing for 102 yards on 16 carries.
On defense the Ganders are very young, with 5 sophomores starting in week 0. They gave up 395 yards to Sterling of which 244 was on the ground and 151 through the air. Lee is going to have a tough time matching up with La Porte's skilled play-makers.
La Porte's Offensive Keys to the Game:
- Get the offensive line some more playing time to build their confidence
- More of the same from last week: mix up the run and pass
Defensive Keys to the Game:
-Get the pass rush to QB Malcolm Ruben and force him to make quick decisions / mistakes
-Contain WR Jaevon Richardson on the outside
-Stop the Lee running game and force them into a one-dimensional offense
Overall La Porte will be heavy favorites in this game, but cannot take anything for granted this early in the season.
