Homecoming took center stage last Friday as the La Porte Bulldogs dropped the Baytown Sterling Rangers in La Porte. The king and queen were Devan Gay and Sadie Selsmer as they were crowned at halftime. The rain held off just in time as the second half was played in a light rain which started just after the ceremony. The first half was all La Porte.
After fumbling on their first possession, the Bulldogs would dominate on both sides of the ball the rest of the first half. The first score came after a good punt return from Sophomore Britt Grant to the Rangers 32 yard line. Senior Running Back Keith Whitely would do the rest taking the first play, with a convoy of blockers around the right side including lineman Junior Tyler Davis and Senior Joey Garcia, for a 32 yard touchdown run.
Another Sterling punt and another great return by Whitely to the Rangers 18 would set up another score. A Junior Running Back Clifton Figaro seven yard scamper would increase the lead to 14.
The Bulldogs defense was stifling in the first half allowing only 18 total yards from Baytown's offense. The next drive would be their 3rd consecutive three and out. La Porte marched down the field with a nice 30 yard pass from Junior Quarterback Jordan Jackson to Junior Victor Holmes leading the way. Jackson would find Senior Receiver Jahvey Mark with a short pass to the left side and Mark made some sweet moves for a 21 yard touchdown pass.
La Porte's defense again came up with a big play after Junior Linebacker Hoza Scott stopped a long pass by getting his fingertips on the ball 20 yards down field he would recover a fumble the next play. However this time a halfback pass by La Porte inside the 10 yard line would backfire and Baytown Sterling's Antoine Franklin would intercept it and run it back 97 yards for the score. La Porte lead 21-7 with 8:12 left in the 2nd quarter.
La Porte would answer quickly with big runs from Whitely, Holmes and Junior Jonathan Lewis to march down the field. The drive would be capped off by Whitely's 2nd touchdown of the night on a nine yard run.
Sterling would pick up their only first down of the half on the next drive, but stalled soon after. La Porte took over at their own 29 yard line with 2:31 left in the half. The Bulldogs went into the 2 minute drill and the hurry up offense did not disappoint. Jackson would have a great drive going 8 for 10 with 67 yards through the air capped off by finding Grant for a 28 yard touchdown pass with 34 seconds left in the half. La Porte lead 35-7 at the break.
The third quarter saw no scoring as the Bulldogs took their foot off the gas a little bit. The Rangers would start to get some offense going driving the ball inside the La Porte 10 yard line. Senior Defensive Tackle Corey Lee made the big play recovering a fumble at the two yard line and ending the drive.
In the 4th quarter Sterling's offense would finally break through with a Richard Zeno seven yard run. However, the breakthrough was ended quickly by Victor Holmes as he would take the ensuing kickoff 99 yards sprinting straight through the Rangers kickoff coverage and shaking the kicker for the score. Holmes seemed to be in a different level of speed than anyone else on the field. La Porte lead 42-14 with 10:23 left.
The Rangers would find the end zone one more time with little time left on a Archie Moyers to Aaron Miles 31 yard hail mary pass with only four seconds remaining.
La Porte controlled the line of scrimmage on both sides of the ball in this one lead on offense by the blocking of Junior Michael Leagan, Senior Justin King, Garcia, Davis and Junior Trevor Nelson.
La Porte moves to 4-1 on the season and take the first game of the district schedule. Sterling suffered their 20th consecutive defeat.
The Bulldogs have a huge match-up in Beaumont Saturday against 2-2 Beaumont West Brook.
