The La Porte Bulldogs made the trip to Freeport last Friday looking to rebound from their big loss to Clear Springs against a tough Brazoswood Buccaneers team from district 24-5A. Rebound they did with a great victory that was dominated in every phase of the game.
The game started out with a quick punt for both teams, but La Porte would settle in on their second drive. Big runs by Sophomore Britt Grant, Senior Keith Whitely (173 total yards, 2 scores) and Junior Jonathan Lewis (159 total yards, 2 tds) chewed up the yards until Whitely would cap it off from two yards out and his first touchdown of the season.
Brazoswood would answer back immediately on a wide receiver reverse with Maleek Goins taking the ball around the left side for a 47 yard touchdown to tie the game.
La Porte would go on to score the next 31 points in impressive fashion on offense and defense. Junior Quarterback Jordan Jackson would hook up with Sophomore Tight End Jaron Dykstra on the next drive to make it 14-7 La Porte.
Then the Bulldogs defense came on strong getting two 3 and outs, followed by Jackson finding Lewis over the top of the defense with a beautiful pass and catch for a 80 yard touchdown. The Bulldogs lead 21-7.
Senior Alex Jones made the transition to middle linebacker this week and impressed big time. Brazoswood had a very large running back that never got going with the Dark Side shutting them down. In the meantime La Porte would add another three points from a Senior Kicker Eric Medina 37 yard field goal. Another big stop for the defense and Lewis had a run of 29 followed by Whitely scoring again from 26 yards out. All of this staked the Bulldogs to a 31-7 halftime lead. The defense forced six 3 and outs in a row to close out the half in very impressive fashion.
The second half saw the Bulldogs taking the foot of the gas a little, but not before a big drive again dominated by the running of Whitely and Lewis put La Porte on the board again with a Junior Tight End Trevor Nelson two yard run.
Brazoswood would get a touchdown just before the end of the third, but too little to late. It was 38-14 at the end of three.
Lewis would score from nine yards out and Sophomore Receiver/Runner David Terrebonne would get a late touchdown run to put an exclamation point on the La Porte victory.
This was just the tuneup the Bulldogs needed before facing their first district contest against Baytown Sterling for homecoming this week. We expect a big crowd as usual for the game Friday night!
