Final La Porte 35 Pasadena Memorial 7

Last Friday night in Deer Park the La Porte Bulldogs took down the Pasadena Memorial Mavericks in round one of the state playoffs 35-7.  It was not the Bulldogs best performance of the season, but who can argue with the results?

The Bulldogs offense had 5 players over 50 yards rushing and rushed for 376 yards total on the night.  Senior Quarterback Josh Vidales (76 yards rushing, 2 touchdowns) had his best game of the season running the ball including a highlight reel run of 25 yards with a great spin move.  He set the tone early on the first offensive drive after a Junior Cornerback Ellis Hutchinson interception with La Porte running the same quarterback sweep to the right for big yards on three consecutive plays to get the ball inside the 10 yard line.  Sophomore playmaker Taejon Wearen (87 rushing yards, 35 receiving yards) capped off the drive with a four yard score around the left side.  7-0 La Porte 9:35 left in the first quarter.

Some ugly play from both teams followed with the teams punting back and forth.  In the second quarter Sophomore Hoza Scott (54 yards rushing) had a couple big runs to get the Bulldogs down to the ten where Vidales would scramble and punch in the touchdown from ten yards out.  The score was La Porte 14 Pasadena Memorial 0 with 2:44 left in the half.

The second half started with La Porte receiving and wasting no time Junior Running Back Keith Whitely (88 yards rushing) took the hand-off up the middle and broke a bunch of tackles for a 50 yard touchdown run.  La Porte 21 Pasadena Memorial 0 with 10:29 left in the 3rd quarter.

La Porte's defense continued to give up some yards, but made stops at the right time.  Pasadena Memorial actually had more yards on offense in the first half.  The Mavs would take the ball inside Bulldogs territory all night, but continuously La Porte's defense came up with big stops.  This time it was a 4th down at the LP 40 yard line.  Vidales wasted no time finding Wearen on the screen for 35 yards.  Then came the highlight run from Vidales from 25 yards out spinning and breaking tackles, showing great vision with a cutback to the end-zone for the touchdown.  La Porte 28 Pasadena Memorial 0 with 6:51 left in the 3rd.

La Porte's D would come up big again on a 4th down deep in their own territory.  With 9 minutes left and the ball at their own 15 yard line La Porte would march on a drive to put the game away and get the backups some playing time.  Wearen had a big 40 yard run into Pasadena Memorial territory and Sophomore Running Back Jonathan Lewis (80 yards rushing) would cap off the drive with a seven yard run for touchdown.  La Porte 35 Pasadena Memorial 0 with 5:38 left.

Pasadena Memorial would get on the board late after a La Porte fumble, but this game was never in doubt.

The La Porte offensive line dominated the line of scrimmage again this week and are becoming a top unit. This game was quick, but that's just the way the Bulldogs wanted it controlling the clock on the ground and making quick work of the Mavericks.

The Bulldogs will play the winner of Fort Bend Bush and Clear Creek being played Saturday night in Pearland.
