Final La Porte 42 Fort Bend Bush 6

The La Porte Bulldogs took care of business Saturday afternoon in Deer Park, taking down the Fort Bend Bush Broncos 42-6.  The Bulldogs shot out of the gate and never looked back.  After winning the toss and deferring to the second half La Porte used the wind and field position to their advantage and the Broncos never knew what hit them.

Junior Kicker Eric Medina started the game with a touch-back the first of four in the first quarter.  After a quick three and out, Bush's punting game faltered. A four yard punt put La Porte at the Bush 29 yard line. A few plays later it was Sophomore Running Back Taejon Wearen putting the Bulldogs on the board and that would be all the scoring La Porte would need. La Porte lead 7-0 at 8:40 in the first quarter.

Again Medina put the ball through the end zone and Bush went three and out. There was a better punt this time as La Porte would start from the 50.  Junior Running Back Keith Whitely would do the rest with a hole created by the offensive line that a truck could drive through.  It was a 43 yard touchdown run and the Bronco's were shell-shocked.  La Porte lead 14-0 with 6:04 remaining in quarter number one.

The same sequence would be on repeat again.  Medina kickoff through the end-zone.  Bush would pick up a first down, but the drive stalled soon after with La Porte's Dark Side defense swarming to the ball.  This time La Porte would block the punt and Senior Linebacker Cameron Whilley returned the ball inside the ten yard line.  However a block in the back penalty moved the Bulldogs back to the Bush 20.  After a five yard loss on the first play Sophomore Running Back Jonathan Lewis would take the misdirection play 25 yards around the left side for another La Porte touchdown.  La Porte lead 21-0 with 2:32 left in the first quarter.  Complete domination and Bush could not recover.

It looked as if we were going to get another repeat sequence as Medina kicked it through the end zone once again.  The Darkside got another three and out.  This time Bush got a good punt into La Porte territory for the first time in the game.  Bush's defense would fight back and stop La Porte this time and Senior Quarterback/Punter Josh Vidales pinned the Broncos back to their own 15 yard line as the first quarter ended. The first play of the second quarter Junior Cornerback Ellis Hutchinson would put the game away with his team leading fourth interception of the season and he ran it back for the touchdown.  La Porte 28-0 with 11:54 left in the second quarter.

La Porte was just too physical up front for Bush to contend with.  The defensive line with Juniors Corey Lee and Alex Jones and Seniors Blake Turlington and Tyrone Graves dominated and stayed in the Broncos' backfield all day.  The Bulldog offensive line with Senior Chris Webendorfer and Juniors Maurice Morris, Tony Briones, Corey Lee, Justin King, Jose Garcia and Sophomore Michael Leagan opened huge holes for the running game.

La Porte would get the ball back with a couple minutes left in the half and Vidales scrambled for a first down on 4th and long. Vidales was not done and he found Wearen on a wheel route for a 34 yard touchdown pass on a beautiful throw and catch with perfect timing.  La Porte would take a 35-0 lead into the halftime locker room and visions of the Katy Tigers dancing through their head.

The Bulldogs played the second half as a team with a five touchdown lead should, on the ground and controlling the clock. Whitely would get a screen pass from Vidales with 5:03 left in the third and run it in for the score to make it 42-0 La Porte.

The Bulldogs Senior leaders have lead the way in the playoffs with great performances.  Chad Sutherland, Chris Hickey, Aaron Nance-Garrett, Whilley, Vidales, Graves, Turlington and all the others have stepped up the last five games.

La Porte called off the dogs and Bush would score a touchdown late in the third quarter to make it 42-6.  That's how the game would end.

La Porte came out as the aggressor and superior team and did what good teams do.  Last years loss in round two against Clear Creek taught this team a valuable lesson and they brought that with them this week.  What lessons were learned against the Katy Tigers in their two previous meetings?  We find out this week as the 11-1 Bulldogs face the 12-0 Tigers next Saturday 6pm at Tully Stadium in Spring Branch for round three of the division two region three state playoffs.
