Last Saturday in Beaumont the La Porte Bulldogs played like the 21-5A District Champion they are. The game was in hand from the first offensive play and a 38-0 Bulldog lead early in the 4th quarter enabled the starters to rest for next week's first round playoff match with Pasadena Memorial. Beaumont West Brook would score three times against the second string and make the final score a 38-20 La Porte win.
West Brook came into the game with losses to only Katy, North Shore and Port Arthur Memorial on the season. La Porte is proving themselves to be an elite competitor and are hitting their stride just at the right time.
La Porte' three running backs Junior Keith Whitely and Sophomores Jonathan Lewis and Taejon Wearen all finished over 100 yards rushing and the Bulldogs racked up over 400 yards on the ground. The offensive line opened holes that the Bulldogs ran through untouched. Juniors Maurice Morris, Tony Briones, Justin King, Corey Lee and Jose Garcia along with Sophomore Michael Leagan and everyone else who played along the line created the holes for the Bulldogs runners.
Jonathan Lewis opened the scoring for La Porte, running untouched around the left side and turning on the jets and scoring from 76 yards outrunning everyone.
Keith Whitely would get the next three scores for the Bulldogs with runs of 19, 20 and 30 yards for scores. Whitely for the regular season had 1132 rushing yards and 11 touchdowns.
A Eric Medina 48 yard field goal would make the score 31-0 with 2:03 left in the 3rd quarter. Medina showed a great leg in warm-ups kicking the ball through from 59 yards out.
The fourth quarter began and La Porte's defense had been just as dominant as the offense. Sophomore Linebacker Hoza Scott showed his vision and athleticism as West Brook ran the option to the right. West Brook's quarterback attempted to pitch to the running back, but Scott caught the ball instead and ran it back 75 yards for the score to make it 38-0 La Porte with 8:56 left.
